Happy summer everybody! We just had to replace our liner so we have all new water. I will post my results below but the pH and TA are low and I am about to add arm & hammer washing soda. My questions are how long will it take to have an effect on my levels, what pH should I shoot for (I have kids and a fountain to bring it up as well), and when is it safe to swim? The kiddos are asking, thanks!
FC-4
CC-0
pH-6.7
TA-40
CH-25
CYA-30 but just fully dissolved, dosed to 70

I would suggest adding baking soda. Enough to raise the TA to 70 ppm. Your CYA will show up as some TA also.

Soda ash will raise the TA more than you want.

What about the pH? According to pool math, the baking soda will only raise it by 0.1.

pH will rise naturally from the elevated TA.
Just be ware that soda ash will be a bigger hammer than you want.

I already added enough soda ash to get it to 7.3 before I saw your first post 🤦🏻‍♀️ Do I still need to add baking soda? And when will it have its full effect and be safe to swim? Thank you.

I did dissolve it in water and poured in front of jet if that matters.

Do not add baking soda now!!!

Check your TA. I suspect it is quite high. Be prepared for the pH to rise quickly and add acid to lower it.

@adm525 How much Soda Ash did you add?

@mknauss correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm getting according to the old Pool Math that ~36oz of soda ash in a 13,500 gallon pool (the approximate amount to raise pH by 0.6) would only raise TA by 19.

In OPs case here, that would bring ph to 7.3 and TA up to 60 which isn't a bad place to be.

Be sure to read the fine print in Poolmath. Those estimations are not very accurate.

They CYA at 70 ppm will add about 20 ppm to the TA.

Testing will show what actually occurred.

This is what I thought as well, I added 41oz

That is fine. I suspect your TA was less than earlier reported. The CYA of 70 adds over 20 ppm of TA.

Nope, tested 40 multiple times over the last few days. Do I need to add anything else to raise pH or just use the fountain?
