Hi - over the last few years, I began to notice a dark stain between the time and a foot or so down. It appears to be the plaster area which is exposed to air during winter but that may be pure coincidence. It also appears to be most of the at around pool but not on the opposite long edge.
I have DB Pearl which has some exposed aggregate to begin with - but the stones are more exposed in the area which is dark. And the pool is very abrasive.

I have tried full strength MA to see if it helped. No. Scrubbed with pumice. No. Ascorbic Acid. No.
Looking for a fresh perspective. I am generally on top of water chemistry - so even if I did let it get out of whack it would not have been long. The only time it could have been chemistry related would be almost 8 months during fall-spring closure.

Pics are new and pool was just opened - but if you zoom in you can see the difference between texture and color.

Any ideas? I wonder if a polishing is in my future.
Thanks - Jason

I don't think that area is stained. You just lost plaster from etching or erosion. Putting full strength MA on plaster will dissolve it and not help the situation.

It could be from being exposed during the winter.

Polishing it is not going to put the missing plaster back.

Learn to live with it.

Yea that’s what it looks like. So I can lose plaster by winter exposure? Wouldn’t this occur to pretty much anyone since there doesn’t seem to be a way to prevent it.

There are so many variables it can happen to some people and not others.

What are you trying to say with "It also appears to be most of the at around pool but not on the opposite long edge."?

Post a pic of the entire pool and indicate where the problem area is.

How widespread is the problem area?

Additional pics attached. So standing on the end of pool away from home; the apparent erosion and exposed aggregate is primarily on the right long edge starting at the concrete “seat” and the worst of it stops around the steps. Even the top step would be exposed during winter and it does not show erosion.

The opposite long edge (left in the pic) has some areas but they seem to stop as I move into the deeper end. It’s definitely not as noticeable as the original pics.

Also I noticed some blue areas in the plaster - mostly noticed on far left side but I’m sure there are other places as well. It almost appears the white plaster has a blue tint to it. I did add a heater so maybe metal discoloration?

You may need to zoom in to see the blue tint in some of the pics.

@ajw22 - posted some pics and was taking a closer look again today. Very odd - there are other areas such as the steps which would be out of water during winter, but they are not the same as the dark areas. And the other side of the pool does not have it to the same degree a the deep end has it very little.

I also noticed some blue tint on a few places - my old plaster was blue and I just added a brand new Raypak heater but I can’t imagine it would cause staining already.

Is it possible the darker color area which is above waterline from October to May is the “true color/texture” - and maybe I have some scaling on the other areas which appear to be whiter?

Hi @ajw22 - checking if you had any other suggestions on this. It’s odd - the discoloration is definitely not around the entire pool. Mostly on the right side and around to far skimmer on left. It’s not a hard straight line - it’s almost streaky at the bottom. Also the steps at similar water level don’t appear to have the issue even tho they would be exposed to the winter as well.

It doesn’t look good for sure - and seems to be more pronounced this year compared to last. I see your point with erosion but the pool surface is not super smooth to begin with - never was.

For future reference I will be unlikely to use white again - :)
