SLAM process and changing filter cartridges

I am getting my pool ready for swimming season. I generally get some visible greenish algae on my walls in the corners and near the top of the plaster line when my free chlorine dips, but I've never had any problems with full on algae blooms, cloudy water, etc. This minor algae is the only issue I've ever really had. I plan to do the SLAM process to get the pool ready to swim, but I am also due to change the filter cartridges in my Clean & Clear Plus 420 filter. My question is this... do I change the filters before the SLAM or after? The filters that are in there have not been cleaned since last May, so they will be pretty gunky right now.

If important, I am in SE Lousiana, have a plaster pool that I chlorinate with liquid chlorine (bleach). I don't cover or close up the pool in the winter. I keep it minimally chlorinated during the winter, which keeps it nice and clear, and generally don't have any problems getting ready to swim again other than the minor algae referred to above that really gets more noticeable when the water temp heats up in the summer.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Randy

Welcome to the forum!
You should clean the cartridges when the filter pressure rises by 25% over clean pressure.

Cartridges should last many years. Until the filter media gets compromised or the end caps deteriorate. 10 years in not uncommon.
If you follow TFPC and the FC/CYA Levels, you should never have algae.
I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry.

I clean my Clean and clear carts once a year in the fall.. I have 2 sets so I take dirty out and replace with the clean set and clean the dirty ones.. :)

Thanks. My cartridges are 6 years old, so I felt I wanted to replace them this season. So I already have a new set ready to install. I was just wondering if I should put them in before I Slam or after. In other words, install the new filters AFTER I have killed off all of the algae and gotten it filtered out, or install new filters first before the Slam?

Thanks very much for your input. One more question... I am attaching a pic of the typical algae I get in my pool. It typically only accumulates in the rough areas of my plaster in shadier areas of the pool. I'm not positive if this is green algae or mustard algae. So should I SLAM using the Chlorine/CYA chart for SLAMming, or should I SLAM using the "mustard algae" level in the TFP PoolMatch Calculator based on my CYA level? The mustard algae shock level in PoolMath is quite a bit higher than the SLAM level in the Chorine/CYA chart. I really want to make sure I get rid of this stuff this year... Thanks.
