Hi all, like most in the south I am going through the freeze. I’m about 40 miles north of Houston, TX. We lost power at 0500 this morning and once we learned it wasn’t a rolling blackout at about 0800 this morning, I drained the pump (Pentair WhisperFlo), booster pump, and filter (Pentair CCP520). After draining, I left the filter air release open and all plugs off to allow for ice expansion. The chlorinator tube has some thin ice inside, so I removed the cap. The pad is encased with wood 4x4s and a plastic roof, so it’s protected from the direct elements. I also covered with a tarp.

The surface has no ice yet. Previously, I covered the Auto Filler with a bucket to try and insulate. I cut water to it and pressed the Auto Filler valve manually to allow the water to drain to the pool as much as possible. The skimmers are not frozen yet - I placed an empty water bottle in each to float in there. The robot cleaner is still in the pool at the bottom.

Anything else I should do? Also, at what temp/amount of time to defrost any ice until I boot the system back up?

Pool is 4 years old, pebble, 18k gallons. Chemicals were in balance prior to freeze with a slightly high alkalinity.

Additionally, I have an above ground spa that was 95 degrees prior to power loss.

I am going to link you to a thread that has some good info. I hate doing this but it is too much info to type out:

My brother's north of you in Flower Mound. He did everything you mentioned. Only adders I had was cut up a noodle and stuff it in the skimmers. I saw this in another post and I think it's a great idea. Bottle may not help a lot if it just floats on the surface. Plus double check the breaker is off.

Stay warm!
