Hi Everyone. I am in a bit of a dilemma here in regards to the purchase of a pool cleaner. I am surely not enjoying cleaning the pool manually and would like to have this done by a robot. The question is if this will really work for my pool.
I live in Cyprus (an island close to Greece). It's pretty dusty here in the air and the main issue for my pool is not leaves or large debris, but actually fine dust that sticks to the bottom of the pool and makes it look unappealing. In combination with small algae particles it will give a greenish color to the blue tiles. So cleaning this regularly is a must.

When I clean it manually I have 2 options:
1. Have the filter on the backwash mode to throw all dirty water out. Water is expensive here on the island, so during the 30 min cleanup I end up with a lot of water waste, which costs a bit. However after this cleanup the pool looks clear and appealing.
2. Use the regular filter mode and circulate the water back into the pool. No water waste, however the pool will look cloudy after this cleanup and it will take more than a day for it to settle. The reason is that the small dust particles manage to come back into the pool, so the cleaning is not fully efficient.

Now the question in regards to the pool cleaner: Will any of those models work in this case? My concern is that if my main sand filter still allows some of that dust to come back into the pool, will the robot have a proper fine filter to stop it all inside? Otherwise it's useless and defeats the purpose if all he dust goes through the cleaner and comes back into the water. It will just make it all cloudy and clean nothing. All videos I watched on pool cleaners just show how the basket is full of leaves and large debris when they pull it out. That's not helpful for my case.

Can you guys give me any feedback on this if you're already using any of those cleaners and maybe an idea on which model you would recommend?

Thank you and wish you all Happy Holidays!

My robot has a dust filter that helps screen fine particles that are on the bottom of the pool.

With that said, I think you may be battling algae as your main issue. Can you post your current test results, including FC and CYA?

JJ beat me to it! The brown "sticky" particles you're getting on the bottom may in fact be dead algae, combined with green algae, which is still alive. Taking better care of your water might solve this for you. A common misconception about pool care is that getting algae once in a while, or constantly, is normal. It is not. Most of us here at TFP rarely see algae, and a lot of us NEVER have algae. THAT is normal.

Your first step is to get yourself a proper test kit. We recommend either of only two. Hopefully you'll be able to order one or the other where you live. If not, let us know and maybe we can come up with an alternative for your area. Don't bother with test strips or pool stores or cheaper kits. You really need a good one. Check it out, and order as soon as you can:

Once you have your kit, do a full suite of tests and post the results here. From that, we can help you determine if you have algae (you most certainly do) and then we'll teach you how to get rid of it, once and for all. Like... forever. Sound good?

In the meantime, tell us all about your pool and your equipment. It really helps us give you the best advice. Write it up and put it into your signature, something along the lines of what I did in mine, below.

And welcome to TFP! Glad you found us. If you want to give what we teach here a try, we'll sort you out right quick, and murky water and a green/brown bottom will be a thing of the past. I promise!

I'm in Cyprus too, but got an auto cover for our pool, that it is closed most of the time. The cover is by far the best thing we did in our pool build, despite everyone, including the seller, trying to talk us out of it. It keeps most of the dirt out of the pool, mostly eliminates evaporation and it ensures that we do not worry about children or animals falling in the pool when we are away.

That said, we got a Dolphin S300i, and it does a great job cleaning the pool - it has a fine filter that will catch most things.

Merry Christmas.
