Looking to Build

Hi there!
I'm currently interviewing pool builders here in Southeast Florida. I've got a good handle on what we're looking for and I've interviewed three companies so far with more scheduled. I was excited to find this forum. It seems like a good place to find unbiased advice with a positive community.
Right now I'm on iteration 3 of my design. I dabble in Sketchup.

My requirements are:
35'+ Swim lane
Spa. My first design was raised. It may become raised again if I decide to lose the waterfall.
Sport Pool suitable for volleyball
Gas heater - there is a 500 gal. propane tank where the chaise lounges are in the picture.

My wants include:
A large deck (~1375'). My yard is large for South Florida and I mow my own grass. Possible outdoor kitchen or pergola in the future.
A rock "splashy" waterfall. I have struggled with this from a cost, aesthetic, and logistical point-of-view.
No need for a large sun/tanning shelf. I have young kids. But we feel that they will outgrow the need for a very shallow area. Thus the large first step, but not huge.

Ham,

It does not appear to me that your rock waterfall will fit into your design.. There is a mighty fine line between a great looking waterfall, and a pile of rocks at the end of your pool.

I have a waterfall "wall" and hardly ever use it.. It was fun for about 30 seconds, and then it was just a waste of money.. It does come in handy when I want to raise my pH because that is what waterfalls do..

If you have been in a gunite spa, then you already know if you will like them or not. If you have never been in a gunite spa, I really recommend that you "try one, before you buy one".. Based upon feedback here at TFP, I estimate that 50% of spa owners love them.. Unfortunately, that leave 50% who don't really enjoy the experience and never, or rarely, use them.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Always good to see some pictures of the space you are working with. They often elicit better feedback.

What depths are you looking at?

Hi Jim,
The rocks are more of a placeholder in the drawing. I've actually revised just today as we really talk through the use of our pool/spa. I have been in a gunite spa. I hadn't really considered a standalone.

3’ is really shallow. Too shallow I believe, for swimming/turns, and definitely shallow for standing. Just be sure that is a depth you’ve tested or are sure of.

I agree. My wife originally thought she wanted 3' in the shallow end, so I held a tape measure from the ground up next to her and showed her where 3' would be as an an example. We ended up going with 3'6" and it is a much better depth. My wife is only 5'3"
