Before finding TFP we purchased a Winter Closing Kit from Doheny's.

From their website:
  • Kit #3- for pools up to 35,000 gallons. Includes Doheny's Metal Out ultimate stain, rust, and scale preventer, Doheny's Winter Guard 35 algae control, Doheny's Oxidizing Shock, and Winter Oxidizing Tablets in a time-released dispenser.
TFP obviously recommends none of these products except an optional algaecide.

Since we already bought the kit and are stuck with the expense anyway, should we go ahead and use it per their instructions?
 
Can you list the ingredients in each product or post pics of the labels on each bottle?
 
3 bags oxidizing shock: Potassium monopersulfate 45%

Winter Guard 35: no ingredients but says its catatonic flocculent

Metal Out: again no ingredients.

Large floater we are supposed to poke holes in and drop in water. Looks like 10+ 2 in tablets in it.

I would not put flocculent or metal out in a pool unless there was a specific need.

Without knowing if the tablets have unwanted ingredients like copper I would trash them.

You accomplish the same thing as Potassium monopersulfate by simply raising the FC to SLAM FC level as we recommend. Then optionally you can let the FC level drift down and add Polyquat 60 algaecide.

I wouldn't. Our former owner said she always bought a closing kit from a wholesale club and just used whatever was in it. But let me tell you, when she opened the pool in April for us before we closed on the house, it was green, murky, and disgusting. So whatever was in the kit clearly didn't work. We're struggling with high CYA so I'm not risking anything that will make it worse over the winter - no mystery chemicals, no tabs in a floater, etc.
