Hi TFP fam,

I made a decision to OB 3 months ago following the advice from a friend who did the same thing in 2019.

I am still very green, but the forums here and my friend have helped me thus far, but i still need some more guidance (to follow).

In the pic you will see the pool will be snug. Recently I got council approval to start digging last week, so I've begun locking in trades the last few days.

I guess Im passed the design and engineering phase and quickly moving toward seeing a massive hole in my tiny back yard. its starting to become very real! And i'll be honest i'm feeling the pressure now.

Anyway here are a few quick details.

What I am building:
  • 6m x 3m inground concrete pool w/ pebble crete finish
  • 2m deep end - 600 shallow end
  • 25,000litres (6k gallon) yes small!
  • Thinking of going a VS pump partnered with a cartridge filter
  • Plumbing will be in the walls (unless you suggest otherwise)

What I need help with:

  1. Best pump, pump size?
  2. Best cartridge and best size?
  3. How many returns and best placement?
  4. Lighting? How many? Placement? Recommendations?
  5. Water tile line necessary?
  6. In terms of excavation, could my pool be dug over the fence? I am on a corner block so access is okay. I can remove panels off the fence, but I am reluctant.
  7. Adding ledgers around the pool, is this an added expense?
  8. Steps necessary?
  9. Any and all recommendations welcomed!
Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Best

Welcome to TFP :)

  1. Best pump, pump size? > These new 1.67 HP VS pumps are great little motors... The Pentair Superflo VS is a great little motor Pentair SuperFlo VS Variable Speed Pump 115/230V - 342001 - INYOPools.com
  2. Best cartridge and best size? > Cartridge 200 to 300 middle of the road, I love mine and has worked great for 5 years.. Clean and Clear Plus Cartridge Filters
  3. How many returns and best placement? > my vote 4 but at least 2 ...
  4. Lighting? How many? Placement? Recommendations? > 2 nichless led in wall pointing away from where you stand, so toward your neighbors driveway..
  5. Water tile line necessary? > Yes, Plaster does not do good out of the water and without tile, as the water level goes up and down it will kill the plaster in that area.
  6. In terms of excavation, could my pool be dug over the fence? I am on a corner block so access is okay. I can remove panels off the fence, but I am reluctant. > That is up to the skill of the digger but if he can not see what he is digging it will be very hard to complete... At least part of the fence will have to be moved if not all of it....
  7. Adding ledgers around the pool, is this an added expense? > Not sure what this is??
  8. Steps necessary? > Yes, but you can do very minimal steps, like 12 inch wide
  9. Any and all recommendations welcomed! > Have fun :)

Wow thanks heaps for the quick response! Super helpful. Nearly all my trades are locked in except the plumber. Do you recommend going for a larger pvc pipe for plumbing?

2 inch works great and it will give you lower pressure and move more water and both those are great things... With a new pool I would recommend a Salt Water Chlorine Generator as they are the greatest thing in life for a pool, There are many manufacturers there... :)
