Some quick Googling suggests that the indicator used in the standard Taylor test is Phenol Red and is limited to indicating a pH around 6.8 on the lower end. Dog urine seems to be in the low 6's... slightly acidic. So, I guess it won't work that well after all. I don't think the tint of the urine is necessarily an issue.
Thanks for the replies - I want to check her urine to see if it is above 7, so maybe it will work. She's prone to a certain type of bladder stones that form when ph is high. : )
Yes, a ph meter is exactly what the vet uses; and we will be getting some dip sticks from the vet shortly for periodic home testing to be sure her food/treats aren't causing a low or high ph. I was just thinking maybe I could use my Taylor test today while waiting for the vet or in a pinch if I was out of the test sticks in the future.
