Not enough room for SWG - is it worth it?

I think I've finally had enough lugging bleach, staining my clothes, and chasing FC. I'm thinking about a SWG.

Here's the problem. I just went and watched a bunch of installation videos - not too bad, pretty straightforward - except the numbnuts who owned the house before us plumbed everything really tight. Like, there's barely 6" of pipe between every 90. See attached picture. I've got plenty of space on the slab to move the DE filter (to the right), but... is it worth it? I'd probably be looking at a near complete replumb of the pump/filter/selector/etc. I'm pretty good at DIY for most things, but is it worth hiring a pool company for a few hundred bucks to redo everything?

And am I just substituting one lugging for another? Bleach for Muriatic acid?

Yub,

I'd fill my pools in with dirt, if they could not be saltwater pools...

One thing to think about is that your pump may have to run longer to allow the cell to generate the amount of chlorine your pool needs.. This can pretty expensive with a single speed pump.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks. The pump is coming up on 7 years old. I'll be replacing it with a VS pump when it kicks the bucket. Electricity is pretty cheap where I am, and since my pool doesn't have the best circulation, I'm used to running it 10-12 hours a day anyway

That looks like it would be easy to plumb. SWG should be last before water goes back to pool. Where it goes down after filter just turn 90 so you can install the cell horizontal. Two 90s and it comes back to continue to return valves. Easy-Peasy. You have a ton of space to the right.

Ask anyone who has SWG if they would give It up. The answer will always be the same.

Interesting. So no concern hampering flow by adding a bunch of 90’s?

It would have some added restriction, but shouldn’t be enough to be a problem. Just be sure to include enough straight run to satisfy the requirements of the installation guidelines for the SWG system you pick.

I would get a SWG but if you can’t have room you don’t have too! If you would have to you could get a chlorine puck dispenser but they don’t work as good so I would recommend to get one they are super helpful! :)

Ok so back to the original concern - is the consensus to run 2’ of new pipe off to the right from the filter output, and put the SWG and flow sensor horizontally there?
And secondly, I see several brands recommended, but not a clear pro/con page anywhere. Do we have a “current recommendations” sticky or could one be made?

I‘ve had 15 years of exceptional service from the Hayward AQR-15. Pricey, but tried and true.
