Installed new intelliflo and got small leak at the discharge thread. I used magic lube red on thread and hand tightened and it bottomed out right when it got tight. Wondering if my fitting is defective and short by a thread or do I need something else?

That looks like it is tapered pipe thread so you will need to use some sort of pipe thread sealant, either tape or paste. I would remove your fitting, clean and dry the assembly, apply the pipe thread sealant following instructions and re-install. That should take care of your leak. Pipe sealant can be found at any hardware or home improvement store.
I have oatey great white. I assume that is type of sealant you are talking about? Was not sure if that was ok to use with motor housing

I just looked up the Oatey, looks like it's good to use. Should be no problem on the motor housing, all pipe threads (NPT) are designed to be assembled with sealant and most likely will leak if assembled "dry". If they are designed to be "more" leak tight without sealant they are labeled NPTF which you are not likely to see with PVC.

You have the problem because you did not use pump unions... Pump unions do away with the problem you are having because they have an O-Ring on the threaded end. And... if you have a water leak on the output, you more than likely have an air leak on the suction side.
Pump unions also make installing a pump much easier.. They look like this....

unfortunately I had everything removed and every single pool store was out of them and pentair told me a standard male adapter works fine and the high temp fittings are not required. I guess it would be best to order and install these!
A standard male adapter will work if you use teflon tape and thread sealant.
However, the unions are the way to go.
If you used silicone lubricant, that won't work.
Also, it looks like the fitting might be cross-threaded.
