Still confused on how to open the pool up

Can you take a picture of the equipment pad? Specifically the pump and the electric panel. Someone may be able to help you drain the water level enough to answer some more of your questions. Nevermind I see them above. I'm assuming your on/off switch for the pump is inside that rusted box that the electrical goes in to? If you open it up are there timers and an on/off switch? If you get the pump on you can turn the valve on top of the filter to waste and lower the water level a couple inches so you don't have any overflow.
Oh ok just curious where does the water go if I were to do this?

Mine is tied into my sewer system. The black valve with the handle on the top of the filter can be set to filter (normal function), recirculate (bypasses filter), backwash and rinse (for cleaning filter) and waste (sends water away from pool system through pvc pipe that runs from the filter straight into the ground). When my pool fills with rain water I dump a couple inches by running the water to waste. As long as you don't drop below the skimmers you are ok any lower and you need a submersible pump.

Found a few submersible pumps....6000 gph...but not sure how to connect it to a garden hose. 2"inlet
Ok you win, but *most* peoples aquarium pump would have the 1/4 inch clear tubes. You forgot to mention that you had the aquarium pump FROM THE SEA LION EXHIBIT!!!!!!!!!!!

You've been debating about this pool for months. So you've never seen the equipment running- what about when first viewing the house to buy? How did the pool look then?

Do you have any home buyers warranty?

I'm just wondering that since you're so unsure perhaps hiring this out might be pref?erred? Let you take it over after its been cleaned and running.

Just my two cents.

Hahaha....I figured out a way to connect the house with different PVC pipes but sadly the pump did not turn on. Actually it tripped my outdoor outlet. I have two more of these pumps at my house I'll bring them and test them tomorrow. If not I'll buy a submersible pump as you mentioned.

I purchased the house in November of 2019 and the pool was filled with leaves and a brown color. I actually cleared out what I could with a net a few months ago and it looks better.

Yes I very well may do that at least they can come here and explain and show me the equipment etc. But I do find the responses on here very insightful and helpful The last thing I want to do is get ripped off by a pool company. I already had one company come here and tell me he thinks I need to replace a bunch of the equipment retile the pool and repaint it as well but he actually never emailed me a quote which I requested from him. another company told me that the tile work is just cosmetic and that they would help me drain and clean it and then I would refill it and then they would come back and test the equipment for me.

If the submersible pumps I found actually work I'll start draining tomorrow maybe I can save a few hundred bucks rather than having the pool company drain it.

Also I do not have a homeowner's warranty never had one in my entire life. Is that something you would recommend for folks that own a pool? I looked into one about eight years ago and it seemed that you have to jump through hoops and hurdles to get them to warranty stuff but I don't know how it is nowadays

Sounds like a good plan. Get as far as you can, and you can always call in local help on the fly. Folks here LOVE 'from green to clean' fairytales, and i swear the nastier the green is the more some people like the challange. You'll have no shortage of helpers if you go the DIY route.

So with that all settled until tomorrow, what kind of 'fish' were you 'keeping' with 6000 GPH pumps ? Orkas ?

From green to clean I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to that and I already have it planned out that I'm going to introduce the pool to the kids and do a sprinting twirling back flip fully clothed into the pool so they'll remember it forever.

I was a monster fish guy...had a wolf fish and a vampire fish etc My brother was into saltwater tanks so I actually those pumps were his but then he got deployed and got out of the hobby. I was supposed to sell a bunch of his saltwater equipment but no one ever wanted to buy anything so I hope one of these pumps will work.

It's the only way i know how to Dad as well. I would fail the back flip miserably and yet somehow my face flop would be better. Bravo good sir.

I will also agree here too !! :laughblue:

Yup that works. Home Depot or Lowe’s have similar ones. The bigger GPH the better of course, and also the pricier so find a happy medium.

Found a solid pump and it's draining well. The shallow end(my guess) is about 4 ft and deep end maybe 9ft deep. If I drain all the water from the shallow end do you think I could have any issues?

The previous owner left something called a aquabot I'll try to see if that thing works we'll learn how to use it. but other than that tool is there any other way I can drain the leaves from the deep end they are very difficult to get with my pool stick.

You can safely drain anywhere above the ground water table. It might be worth digging a 9 ft hole nearby to see if it matters. If you have ground water and you drain below it, the pool becomes a boat and it could suffer massive damage if it decides to float. Maybe or maybe not, but with enough possibility it becomes a real concern. If you know there is no current ground water you can drain the whole thing, shovel out the crud and be refilling in an hour.

Oh ok great... I'm pretty sure I don't have any groundwater as mine pool is on a hill and my house also doesn't have any sump pumps in the basement (walkout basement). I remember the pool company was telling me that they would drain it out and then put some muriatic acid in power wash it. I have a power washer should I do that as well?

Read up on it, or the experts will be along shortly. Plaster is way out of my lane. However, now will be the time to do any scrubbing/ acid washing or repairs to lights/returns etc.

Do you have a pool leaf rake and pole? Some fine a leaf vacuum helpful also (uses garden hose to flush stuff into the bag). It will take time and effort.

The aquabot is wonderful to have to maintain a pool. A pool robot and an SWG makes pool ownership a breeze. Though it probably isn't the right tool to use to do a big job like you have in front of you.
I have a net on a long pole which has proved useful. But the leaf vaccum looks great!
