In October 2018, I bought a house that had a 28,000 gallon inground pool. Last year was the first year I have ever tried taking care of a pool/chemicals, etc. The pool uses bromine tablets through a chemical feeder for sanitization, which was how the pool has been sanitized since construction in 2006. I am almost certain the pool water has never been totally replaced. Long story short, as a result of multiple pH bounces, very high then low bromine levels, dropping alkalinity, increased TDS, numerous pool company bills to attempt to stabilize, chemical smell of water, I have decided to completely drain the pool and start to use chlorine as described in TFP.
I called a local pool company to ask for assistance with draining, because I do not want the draining and refilling to damage the vinyl liner. The liner has one patched spot and wrinkle in the liner. I was told by this company that a total water replacementwas not necessary because the bromine would eventually get completely used up by the chlorine and when that happened, chlorine would be the only sanitizer working in the pool. I also contacted the pool builder who said the same thing and stated that a total water replacement would only be necessary if switching from chlorine to bromine, not bromine to chlorine. Both were not willing to help with the drain/refill and did not offer any suggestions to decrease the risk of damage to the liner.
I have no problems attempting this myself but want to decrease the chance of liner damage.
The goal is to be bromine free and use chlorine only. I definitely do not want to go through another Pool season like last year! Is a total water replacement necessary? Should the liner be washed or treated with anything prior to refilling? Any advice to remove the chemical feeder ? Etc, etc. The pool has a vertical grid DE 3620 filter, Hayward self-priming super pump IS-2600X5-98, Hayward H series heater H250FDN, Pentair chlorine/bromine high capacity commercial feeder HC 3315. Thanks in advance !
