Blue Green Cloudy water

I opened inground pool on 5/11/20. Its a 2002 bromine liner pool, 17500 gallons. Very dark green and debris on bottom. I installed new cartridges this year.
At startup, I added 5 gal chlorine & 2 ultima yellow. Pool changed to blue green and cloudy. I have robot cleaning debris on bottom. I can see the robot in the shallow end but water all around is still cloudy. I've changed baskets out but have not vaccummed yet. A water test shows bromine level next to nothing even though brominator is on 10. PH is low too. My pool store is closed to get testing. Any advice. Thank you!!!!!!!

I am far from a bromine expert, but I do know that Ultima Yellow is nothing but sodium bromide. As you already have a bromine pool that really isn't doing anything at all. Just increasing your bromide level, which should already be high enough.

How long has it been since you last changed the water? If you regularly use bromine tablets then DMH can build up. It buffers bromine like CYA does to chlorine, but there's not an easy test for it so regular water changes are occasionally called for.

I agree with JD on this. If you have been using bromine tablets for many years, your water probably has a lot of built up DMH (dimethylhydantoin). There's no way to test for it and it will reduce the effectiveness of bromine the same way high CYA causes problems in a chlorine pool. You can keep shocking the pool with liquid chlorine to try to get it to clear, but the DMH is going to hamper your efforts.

Do you close this pool in the winter and drain water from it? Do you get enough rain where you are in the summer season to allow for some fresh water overflow? Exchanging pool water for fresh water is you best bet in getting the DMH levels down but at some point it will need a significant drain and refill.

The last time the water was changed was in 2014 when I got a new liner. I do close the pool in the winter, but hey do not recommend draining the pool because of the liner coming undone. We do get a lot of rain here especially last two years. I had a similar issue last year and I really believe its the debris at the bottom. I will clean the cartridges and see what happens.
