As I mentioned in one of the previous threads my NPB didn't really offer me any upgrades/perks when was doing the installation. And now what I am doing is adding some automation elements to our pool.

Today I replaced my mechanical pool timer which was controlling my pool pump and SWG with Dewenwils Outdoor Wi-Fi Smart box. This is pretty much same device as WiOn (I guess this is a new replacement for WiOn since I couldn't find one for sale).

I run my pump 4 hours a day and it allows me to schedule my timer to run 1 hour -every 4 hours. It utilizes application available for iOs and Android and works with your house internet router. It has 5 different timers - programmable, countdown, astronomic, holiday random, security random. You can also manually turn your equipment on and off from your phone.

I also added second switch to my pool LED lights so I can control them from my patio without getting up and walking 90 ft to where my all my equipment is located in the corner of the property.

Installation is pretty straight forward and setup was easy. I will include a few pictures and if anyone has any questions I will do my best to answer them.

Happy holidays!!

That is exactly the same device as the WiOn. Only the name has been changed. I’m betting that Woods quit importing them from China, and there is now a new importer/distributor.

I used a smart switch to turn my pool heater on or off, but for temp control I still have to go to the heater. To remote temp control to an iPhone, (without an expensive pool automation system) would be much more of a challenge.

Now I want to figure out how to make my heater controllable from my phone without investing $$kk into automation system.

Page 30 of the manual It involves connecting two (or three for pool AND spa control) wires from your heater board back to itself. There's a common which is usually 24VAC and then you connect it to the pool or spa selection wire on your heater board.

I am wondering how an expensive automation system obtains signal and data from the heater and controls the temperature. Is there some sort of port/plug in the heater it's self where Pentair system connects?

Typically RS-485 is used to send actual sensor data back and forth in the pool world on the high end stuff. Your particular heater doesn't support that. So you have to flip a relay to select a preselected pool heat or spa heat. If you have a temperature probe in your water, you can just max out the preselected temp heat value and control the on/off with your automation

Often the automation system itself has a temperature sensor inline on the suction side and power to the heater is simply turned on or off as needed to maintain desired temp. In other words the only communication with the heater is power on or off

Hey. Thanks for the info and pics. I am thinking about replacing my Intermatic manual pool pump timer to this one also and wondering how it’s working for you at this time? Just worried that would stop working after a while and if better of with mechanical things that may not break as easily. Thanks!

I installed the same box in April 2018 (called the WiOn 50054 at that time) and it's still functioning without issues. I only use it occasionally to control my waterfall/rock slide pump and the box itself is within an enclosed equipment shed. Works well with Alexa.

It would be nice to hear from @hagani about long term/daily reliability.

Hey guys, sorry for the delayed response. So far worked great last season. I didn't open the pool this year yet but will post an update once weather in NJ will get warm enough to open the pool..

On the other note - I am thinking about upgrading from single speed to VS pump and not sure how I will lay everything out since VS pump has it's own timer and programming.

It shouldn't be an issue. Your pump can be wired (inside the box) to the line-in side so it receives constant power. Your SWG would remain as is. Your SWG should only be scheduled to receive power while the pump is scheduled to run. The advantage to using a Wi-Fi box for the SWG is that it will reset to current time and retain the schedule when power is restored.
