Spa/Pool combo - spa loses water while pump is ON

Hey TFP, recently bought a house with a pool spa combo and I'm a first time pool owner. Our spa will lose water while the pump is running. I found a Jandy that controls the flow of the return water to the pool and spa. If I put the Jandy to return approximately 80% to the spa and 20% to the pool the spa will stay at the correct level, barely overflowing into the pool. However, if the jandy is left in this position there is barely any water returning to the pool and the skimmers do not have any suction. The skimmer suction increases if the Jandy is 80% pool and 20% spa but the spa will drop approximately 6 inches in that postion. If the pump is off there is no water loss in the spa or pool.

Is there another reason the spa would be dropping while the pump is running?

Thomas,

In general, when you are in the pool mode, a little water is also sent to your spa. Since there is no way for the water to leave the spa, when in the pool mode, the spa will spillover into the pool. If the water in the spa is going down, it has to be going out the floor drains in the spa. In the pool mode, the floor drain should be shut off by the Intake valve.

Either the Intake valve is leaking, or it is not set to the full spa off position..

Show us some pics of your equipment pad showing all your valves..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thomas,

The Intake valve is the one right in front of your pump. It should be either all Pool or all Spa, but never half Pool and half Spa.. That is the reason your spa drains with the pump running.

Thanks,

Jim R.
