AGP Wall Rust Help

I have a 21x43 AGP with a 7 ft deepend. It was installed in 2012. So it looks like the skimmer has a small leak I haven’t noticed and there is rust forming. Also on one of the oval ends at the bottom there is some rust forming. So I’m looking for some advice and experience anyone else may have had in repairing or slowing this down. Just from the sheer size of this pool I don’t want to replace it. The skimmer part rust I just noticed so I don’t know how long that has been Going on. The oval section has looked like this for a couple years now. I believe it is just from the outside only, being caused by the dirt being splashed up on the metal since I havent done anything around the base on that side. The rest of the pool is in fine shape and had gravel around the base of it. I was wondering if something like a rust stabilizer or something similar may work and then repaint it? I have never used one of these products. Has anyone else tried this? I‘m in CT and wanted to try to repair before the season starts this year. Thank!

You can try to remove the surface rust around the bottom edge/track (brush, sand, etc) and apply any number of rust preventive compounds, stabilizers or spray paints. If it's only superficial, that's good. There a re a couple spots along the bottom that, from the picture anyways, appear deeper and more significant. I can't quite tell. Only you will know for sure once you start trying to remove that rust. If it's penetrated, there's not much you can do. The last thing you want it a backyard tidal wave.

The skimmer and mouth opening are tricky on their own, but fortunately not as much water pressure exerted as at the bottom. But same concept as above. Brush/sand off all the rust you can. To fill voids, you might try an epoxy or JB Weld-type product that might help, followed- by more of that rust preventive compound or spray. Rust stinks. Once it starts, it's really hard to control unless you can rut it out completely. I'd give that bottom section a really good inspection though. Good luck!

I'm concerned with the skimmer opening. Once you remove the skimmer, you will see how bad the rust is. You'll have to pull the liner away from the wall with any type of repair you do.
It looks like the gasket failed and allowed water between the wall and the skimmer.
We had the same thing and it was rusted quite a bit. We had to bolt a metal plate to the skimmer and return openings, recut the opening, redrill the screw holes and paint with rustoleum to cover the exposed metal. It's a doable fix, a bit time consuming. You can buy the skimmer plate and return plate kits on line but my husband bought galvanized sheet metal and cut our own.

Thanks for that link. I may need a panel. I haven't really gotten into the nitty gritty of my rust issues yet.
