Closing up for the season... what do y'all do in the south?

New salt system and still learning. I'm getting there... 23 weeks without brushing or shocking and I'm down to running the pump 3 hrs a day.

Historically, I've run the pumps about 2 hrs a day from my birthday (today) until Valentine or St. Paddy's Day (I do not run the pumps at all if the pool water is below 50 degrees). I live in an urban environment (New Orleans) and do not have a cover or the space to store one.

So, what do Urbanite's in the south do to close up the pool come winter time?

That's not good. Regardless of how clean your pool looks, I would suggest you brush weekly......at least the walls.

I would also suggest that you care for the pool as normal. Not running the pumps at all is also not a good practice.

How often do you test your chemistry?
 
I test everything once a week (FC, CYA, pH, TA, Hardness... etc) primarily because I'm new at this. Next season I'll probably go to weekly on FC and pH and monthly on the other tests.

I'm with you on the brushing thing and I am going to brush it today (this was my stupid test to see how long I could get away with it). It's my intention to brush once a month from here on out... I'm old, and it wears me out.
 
So, keep running the pump (sub-50 degree pool water). I will remove the Polaris 280 @ sub-50 as the hoses become stiff and brittle. I've only seen an extremely thin layer of ice form on the pool twice and only for a day or two over the last 15 years.
 
That's a pretty good plan. The pump will do just fine right on down into 40 degree temps..

If you get a really STRONG cold snap, simply run your pump 24/7 until the very slight danger of freezing pipes is past.
