Pool Winterization, specifically skimmer winterization.

Hi everyone,

I just had to switch my pool company for closing my pool and the new company did things a little different than the previous company and I just wanted to make sure this was ok. 1) They left the sand filter on "recirculate" vs "winterized" this wasn't a big deal because it was easy to move the valve, but is that ok to do? 2) when winterizing the skimmer they didn't leave an empty plastic bottle in the skimmers in order to prevent ice damage to the skimmers. They also didn't wrap the skimmer cover in a plastic bag to prevent rain from entering the skimmer. They claim that this is an unnecessary step and they've been in business for over 60yrs and have never done this and never had issues. I am worried because I don't want damage done to my pool. The skimmer cover is now covered by my safety cover so it would take some effort for me to remove a few of those loops to place the plastic bottles in the skimmers. I live in Michigan so it gets very cold and we get significant amounts of snow and rain. What do you guys think is it ok to leave the skimmers as is or should I either do this myself or call them back to put the plastic bottles in?

As always thank you for your help you guys rock!!

It is about having something in your skimmer that ice can compress so that it does not press on and crack your skimmer. Ice expands by 9%. You need to give it that 9% space to expand without cracking anything.

Instead of plastic bottles you can put cut up pool noodles into the skimmer.

I would want something in the skimmer. You don’t want to be worrying all winter.
