Heater Woes

Installed a Hayward H250IDPL2 in January 2007 and has worked flawlessly until today. Living in SW Florida it is not used excessively so every couple of weeks I fire it up and let it run for 5 or 10 minutes. This morning I fired it up, it ignited and then shut down. It tried to restart, could hear the blower come on but would not ignite and wound up with a IF error code. I’m a handy guy but don’t like messing with gas so I would have to place a service call and likely parts...$$$. Given its age, near 13 years, am I on borrowed time and just buy a new one? If so, what would you recommend for my pool...thanks.

Rust is the biggest killer of heaters, Rats and other small animals, and their associated discharges are a close second. If you have either, and depending where it has started, you may be in the market for a replacement.

Also note: Even though you dont use the heater often, you are still getting the same mileage since it is out in the elements (sun and rain).

In my opinion these were the worst H series heater that Hayward made. Then came the current model they are running with now. Anyway, you are on borrowed time with this unit. IF would tell me that you have a possible issue with the flame sensor. The unit lights, and then goes out rather quickly. While not an expensive part. I would consider looking at the overall condition of the unit before making any repairs.

Problem has been solved, thanks to all who offered info. I’m embarrassed to say but my 250 gallon propane tank ran out of gas. Shame on me for not checking that first. Having auto delivery I didn’t didn’t dawn on me to check until Sunday (july 4 weekend) when the bbq wouldn’t light. So, after a Monday morning call to the gas company they filled the tank and everything fired up. Lesson learned and again thanks for the help.
