New pool owner in NY

Hello!

A few months ago we bought a house with this in-ground pool. I am somewhat familiar with what is involved in caring for a pool - we previously had a 14' above ground, but we drained and disassembled it each year (Intex Ultra Frame). It wasn't too difficult to maintain 4K gallons for only 4 months, but obviously this is a different animal.

The pool was opened about 3 weeks ago by a local company that maintained it for the previous owners. It needed some work, but I am fairly proficient and fearless with most things mechanical (I successfully replaced the seals and bearings in the existing 1 HP single speed motor before deciding to replace it with a variable speed motor anyway).

I bought the TF-100 test kit and SpeedStir, but have not used either yet. So far, I have been using the chemicals and instructions provided by the pool company - several BioGuard products went in at opening, along with "smart sticks" in the skimmer. I am looking to transition to using the TFP method, but have a bit more reading to do. My plan is to figure out the test kit in the next few days, and then I will post a new thread with my initial numbers and plans for how to proceed.

Thank you!
Zach

Zach, breakout your new TF-100 and run a set of tests. If your CYA in the water you inherited is high then using the pool store sticks are only making your problems worse.

You should get to TFP methods ASAP. The pool store products you are using are not the best for your water.

WHen you do your tests list them for us like this:
FC
CC
pH
TA
CH
CYA

This way is easier for us to "read" in this order. And then we can help you as you need....? Since you're fairly pool savvy right?
Just remember that the idea behind TFP care is that you don't add anything to your water that you don't know what response to expect. Nothing is added on a "schedule" but rather by actual need. Your test kit will be the determiner as to if your pool needs something or not.

Welcome to TFP! I love your Hostas.
