Stair Repair

Hello everyone. It's pool time! I spent last summer losing water to a crack in my top step that that had been poorly patched by previous owners. I want to start this season off right and plan on fixing it properly before I get everything up and running. The top tread needs to be resupported and the fiberglass repaired/coated. I have found two outlets online.

One is pool step specialist. They have been recommended on here. They have thus far been very short on details as far as what a repair with their kit entails, which automatically causes suspicion with me. I'd prefer they be more open about what is in their kit and how they recommend repairs. One thread I found showed large sections of the stairs being cut out and then a bunch of Bondo work. Not an idea that thrills me.

Another option I found uses expanding foam. It seems like a very simple way of doing things. They provide more detail on the process, and it only requires a few 5/16" holes that would be a lot easier to fix than large holes. But will this repair be effective long term? Has anybody repaired this way?

Would appreciate any advice you can give.

Vinyl liner ... fiberglass steps ... I'm a plaster/gunite guy. I will pass this to another NJ brother @jimmythegreek

I will just say pics of the pool, steps and cracks will help folks understand the situation.

I dont think I would ever use expandable foam. It's not structural and breaks down over time when buried. The stuff they use to Jack concrete slabs is different chemicals. I would drill some holes and use a loose mix of no shrink grout any Mason supply would have it. The holes aren't hard to patch in with glass matt and you could even shape and dremel the yard pattern back in to make it seamless. You would have to drain down below steps and then if fiberglass use acetone after final sanding to remove any wax from gel coat left then mineral spirits then paint. You need paint that's 2 parts and has UV protection and is ok for submerged application. Marine products are good for this but not "topside" products. A first class finish is an ecofinish on the stairs but its pricey

Nothing is going to be long term for you, your risers are pushing through the treads.

I call a guy who does corvette bodywork & pay him 800 per tread.
I appears to be the opposite actually. There is no support under the step at all. The Pool Step Specialties folks say it's common on these steps when backfill settles for the bracing underneath to come unglued and you lose all support.

Yep, it looks like the entire step has sunk based on the angle of the coping where it meets the concrete. I think you need to reinforce the undersides of the steps (mud/cement injection?) and then proceed with the cosmetic repair.
