How important is a Jandy pool valve for pool heater?

Hello, I’m in the process of installing my Raypak pool heater. Someone mentioned in another thread that I should use a Jandy three way valve instead of installing an external bypass as shown in the Raypak installation manual.

Local stores do not appear to have them in stock here, not even local pool supply stores that install the heaters. I have an event on Saturday and am hoping to have the heater running by then for my guests, so I’d prefer to not wait. I’ll also keep calling around for a Jandy valve.

I’m attaching pictures of what I have, in case it’s helpful, but I’m guessing it’s pretty standard. I’ll also attach a picture of the installation recommendation for an external bypass.

Jandy are the best (opinion) but any 3 way valve designed for POOL use is ok.

Thanks, that’s helpful. One follow up question.

Is it okay for me to install the three way valve directly after the filter liner and then run the inflow and outflow lines in long runs to the heater, or do I need to install the three way valve right at the heater? Hope that makes sense. I think by installing it in the main line where I’m cutting in, it’d save one T connection. But I’m not sure if there’s a reason I can’t do that.

ctp,

You do not "Need" a by pass at all... Only if you have a huge pump with a lot of flow and that is not what you have...

We often suggest adding a by pass, but it has nothing to do with too much flow through the heater. It has mainly to do with having the ability to shut off the water going to the heater so it can be removed from the system and the pool can still be operated. The by pass set up in your pic will not do this.

Thanks,

Jim R.
