So I clicked on the left of this page on "Pool math" and got a info window.

"You do the swimming. We do the math "
I have a PC (Several, but this is Windows 7).. So I click "Get It from Microsoft"
Wants me to log in with my Microsoft account. OK, did that.
Says I have no devices. So I go to "Install on my devices" I get:
Where do you want to install?

It looks like you don’t have any applicable device(s) linked to your Microsoft account. To install, sign in on a device with your Microsoft account.

So I try to install a new device. Nice! MUST be a Windows 10 machine.

So this is basically a Microsoft Sales Enhancing Application. :-(

Anyone know how to install Pool Math on a 2 year old Windows 7 machine???

Guess I'll stick with PoolCalc and my clipboard.

As it is an App within Microsoft, I believe they are only available with the Windows 10 OS.

It's available for 4 different operating systems, 3 of which are not made by Microsoft. So I'm unclear how your remark regarding the developers' intentions make any sense.

Also Windows 10 has been out for 4 years. Mainstream support for Windows 7 ended in January 2015 so if someone sold you a new computer with it in 2017 they ripped you off.

But on a personal note, I rather like using a clipboard. I prefer the PoolMath HTML version over PoolCalc though.

Hi Guys,
Didn't want to make such a rumpus :) " so if someone sold you a new computer with it in 2017 they ripped you off. " Well, it came with Win 7 installed and a cd that was supposed to be able to upgrade it to Win10, but it never would finish installing...
PoolCalc on the web is fine for me.. I had it lose my data once recently but I just restarted / redefined my pool. IsThere any way to back that up.. ? (It's saved in Cookies, right??)
Almost have everything in balance; a little more borax/Hcl to go. Our new solar pool heater system has it up to 58F and if we get some more sun next few days it will be enough for my wire, who hit the pool last year at 62 F! We're at 44 degrees north so this IS early for typical pools..
I will post about the solar heater build, and the computer controls after I mess with the algorithm with several more days of experience.
Thanks!

In all fairness, there is a Microsoft connection. ?

The developer came to TFP proposing we work together is a developer working on a product owned by Microsoft. This product is a program App developers use to write Apps for iOS, Android, and Windows. In the past developers would have to write multiple codes as each operating system uses a different language and navigation setups. This cost developers a ton of time. This program now converts one code into another to save time. Right around the time Windows 10 was launched the company was bought by Microsoft as they needed some tools for developers to entice them to make Windows 10 apps.

In the future we do deeply hope to update the webpage bringing the App to the webpage. There’s a project that’s being watched called Project Uno that we’re hoping ?can be used to update the webpage, but we’re talking in the future........and even then, don’t worry, we won’t delete the existing web version, we just may move it.

Sounds like you're talking about Xamarin - which there is a project working on compiling Xamarin to the web with another technology called Blazor. It's in beta now, but it shouldn't be much longer before it can be done - although the app developer would have to chose to do it.

I do Xamarin development here and there for work.

Bump...
I did search.. this thread was the most recent and on topic...

So is there a way to get the Pool App for Windows without going through an MS account? Sorry I am not a big fan of the walled garden stuff and I don't need to make my digital footprint any bigger. If the app is not available via a simple download. so be it.

And for all you Win7 naysayers.. I work in IT.. Windows10 has been the bane of my existence. Everyone of my clients that have updated/upgraded to it have issues with its update process. I would say easily 10% go belly up after burping on an update. How can anything that unstable be used in a business environment. Meanwhile my clients that are still on Win7 have had few issues, I can better vet the updates, and have fewer incompatibility issues with the legacy software that they are required to use for their business... Too bad they went and retired it. ok.. I'm off the soap box now..

I don't believe its available outside of the app store. I 100% understand being anti walled garden, but there are some advantages to UWP apps. They are sandboxed and cant do things like edit your registry, which allows you to install and uninstall apps without "machine rot", unlike traditional apps.

I worked in IT for a company with 70,000 employees. We did not have any issues with our deployment of windows 10.

I'm the "IT person" in my family and I'm in the process of migrating (using the correct vernacular) everyone - wife, kids, mother-in-law - to Windows 10. Everyone is complaining - no-one wants to be beholden to Microsoft by handcuffing themselves to a Microsoft account but I don't see any way around it for apps that are only available though the Microsoft store. It's all about privacy - there is none any more!

Thanks for he input... I work in a different environment. Mostly small businesses that all use a variety of legacy apps to make their product work. In a large corp of 70K you likely had access tools and had the manpower to vet everything for your end users. I only have two clients that WSUS servers where I can manage the update cycles of Win10. Let alone trying to mold the OS into running specialized legacy DOS apps from companies that have long since gone out of business. ;)

So anyway.. the old Math App runs just fine.. the equations are the same.

There is a way to setup a local account without setting up a MS Account in Win10... but it definitely isn't the default way they want you to do it. Also there are third party apps that will return the start menu to something that looks more like what older windows users were used to.

I'm assuming that if they are using Xamarin, they are coding in a .NET language. (Lets hope C#.) It should be possible to make a native .exe (managed code one, not native x86/x64) for Windows. shouldn't it? MS as an app platform is kind of dead anyway with the total demise of Windows Phone... I thought the coders were Java jockeys, but I do have a lot more respect for them now! :) It also explains why it possibly crashes on iOS in the same way as Android... :) That's a good cross platform development system... :) Tho, running something like this on a phone or tablet makes a lot of sense versus a laptop....

And in the large corporate world, Windows 7 is still in the process of going away. For the most part stuff works on 10, but the "security" and "spyware" that is in 10 can be really annoying during a conversion to 10...

Xamarin uses UWP for the windows app, which for a long time did not support being a regular EXE, but you can do that now. I'm not sure that the Xamarin tooling supports it natively or not. I've been out of the mobile game for a bit and back to web development.
