We've owned this house for over 4 years now, and we inherited a salt water pool that hadn't been opened for several years. As a result of not maintaining the pool, any plaster surface there might have been, was gone. So it was just a bare gunite pool--which I didn't mind at all for the short term. It was beautiful and somewhat functional.

In our first year here, I learned about pool chemistry and took on the job of (actually) draining the swamp, cleaning it, and making it operational again. TFP was EXTREMELY helpful. It was open 2015 and 2016, even though it would regularly lose water, and I had to add a lot of salt. However, I did not open it in 2017 and 2018, due to a lot of construction and excavation happening on site for our geothermal system.

So it's time to finally get the pool resurfaced, have the leak fixed, and then get treated consistently like a real pool. I just found the Pool Math application, and I'm really looking forward to using it, to take the guesswork out of the maintenance equation. I'll be reading and posting some questions regarding resurfacing, our Caretaker system, solar heating, addressing leaks and more.

I've got a pool that I think is 26 x 40, irregularly shaped... and I estimate it holds 36,000 gals.

I want to thank you for putting together this forum. I've learned so much...with relatively so little effort!

Hi Bob :handwave: Glad to have ya here! Where abouts on LI are you? We've certainly got a few "Lung Guylanders" around TFP. Might be your neighbors, even! ;)

I'll join Kim in my interest to this Geothermal business? I know nada about such things but it sounds...interesting!

We always drool over pool pics....even those in the middle of construction. Please consider feeding our habit...

HI Maddie! I'm in Huntington.

And yeah, the geothermal is really great. Basically, it's a closed-loop system that replaced my former heating oil system, with the heat and coolness from the earth. For each zone in our house, there are 6 lines that go down, and come back up 75' holes in the ground. Regardless of the temperature at which the fluid goes down, it always comes up at around 55 degrees. Instant air conditioning, instead of cooling hot summer air into cold air! Very efficient.

The electricity that runs the pumps and system mostly comes from our solar panels. So it's quite nice, and between the two systems, we'll be saving a whole lot of money on utility bills.

The one caveat on the geothermal is that it's expensive as a retrofit, and it does require tearing up your grounds. For new construction, there's no way I'd build without it...
