Two Black Spots

Hello and thanks for your help. I have 2 black spots on my steps. I have not been able to get them off. I went to my local pool store and bought something called Spot Out, stopped by pump, and sprinkled it on the spots. I left it overnight. It did not remove the stains and maybe lightened them a little. I have attached two photos of the stains. Anyone have any idea what they are and a better course of action to take to get rid of them. While the chlorine levels this winter have been kept normal to high, I have not done a great job of keeping the ph under 7.8. Also, I the stabilizer has been high. Not sure if that could be a cause.

Thank you.

Any chance a piece of metal may have sat on the spots? Try some crushed up Vitamin C in a sock to see if it lightens/removes them.

Who is the manufacturer of the spot out chemical? Suncoast?

Do as Marty suggests - crush up a bunch of vitamin C tablets in a thin sock or nylon and let it sit on the spot for about 10-15mins. Report back what you see.

Use a stick or something to see if the spot will scrape up.

It might be black algae. If it is, you should be able to scrape up some mold type substance that will be bluish green.

It might be a rebar or wire tie bleeding through. Try a magnet to see if it will stick.

I just did a fresh test.
FC- 15
PH - 7.4
TA - 80
CH - 225
CYA - 70

Chlorine so high probably because of the Suncoast Spot Out I used, which is 99% trichlor.

I have scrubbed the spots with a metal brush and with a pummace stone and they did nothing.

Thank for the help.

Yep, the Suncoast product is trichlor. Unlikely the spots are black algae.

Try the vitamin C.... JamesW’s magnet trick might work too. Vit C removes iron stains but if it’s rebar or a wire tie, it’ll have to be remediate or else the stain will just come back.

Cheap Vitamin C tablets. You can use an old sock or panty hose. Crush them up a bit after you put them in the sock.

Roofing nails possibly. Do you a have a pool cleaner that runs by that area? It may have sucked up the offending nail. Check any vacuum baskets for foreign objects.
