Jandy Aqualink 'Auto' mode acting up

I'm relatively a new pool owner and have learnt a lot from this forum that I braved to avoid going to the pool store all year and ended up maintaining the pool by myself. It is a 24 yr old pool and was maintained by the pool store all along. A few weeks back, my jandy control panel and PDA started acting up by switching automatically to the spa mode all the time no matter what. I've it currently set to the standby mode where everything seems to function normally if I need to run the Pool or spa mode. But flipping it to Auto runs the spa mode only. I've tried resetting the control panel with battery removed and also clearing memory on the PDA but of no avail. I'm running out of options and wondering if the spa switch is broken. Please advice.

Thanks in advance.IMG_0253.jpgIMG_0274.jpg

If you have Spa Mode as one of the options on your spa side switch, good chance that it is randomly turning Spa Mode on. Mine was turning on the Air Blower randomly and replacing the switch fixed the issue.

You can test whether or not it is the problem by disconnecting the spa switch wiring from the control board, putting the controller back in Auto mode and seeing if the problem goes away. The Spa Side Switch should be the 6-pin black connector in your photo and stenciled as such on the board side. You can just unplug after you shut power to the control board.

Thanks for the response. I did try unplugging both the red and black connectors but no luck. The controller still switches to spa mode no matter what. I was hoping that the reset option will clear all settings and tried those too multiple times. If it's of any help, the system has a JVA system to toggle between spa and pool mode.

Have you tried powering off the PDA and see if it is that?

Yep. Even tried clearing memory on the PDA too.

Yep. It allows only 2 programming per mode and I've cleared them all both on the pool and spa mode.

it might be a short in the controller for that button. I assume if you put it in auto and push that button to get it back to pool mode it cycles back the next time? I know mine stays on whatever it is set on unless I hit the button to change it. apologies if you already answered this.

Yeah. The default mode for auto is pool mode when I reset it. But only stays there for a couple of secs and then goes to spa mode no matter what I’ve tried so far. I’ve changed it to standby for now since the Manila option works now and I don’t want to mess with it since I’ll be closing the pool this weekend anyways. I was happy not wasting my money on the pool store this year. I only bought 12.5% chlorine at job lots and spent less than $100 for chemicals this year. Looks like a big spend for spring to fix this **** thing unless I get lucky with any one else who had a similar issue. Thnx again for your time and response.

I'm assuming that is an auxiliary item (light, water feature) that was disconnected and it if were me, I'd shut power and trace that wire at some point just to get to know my system. But I'm not sure it is affecting your current issue if nothing has changed recently with that.

To further jwmote's suggestion, did you clear individual program line items or the entire memory? If the entire memory, did you have to set things up again from scratch, including pump settings?

One thing I'm wondering is if the previous owner had a cold weather program for Fall/Winter that assumes you want the system in Spa Mode all the time. Have you looked through all Program A and Program B options? If you go into Program Group from the Menu, there is a Start Date for each. If the start date there corresponds to the recent behavior change, that could explain it.

BTW, you need to select each program, A or B, and then select Start Date in order to see the settings for each one.

I do have a fiberstars lights and air blower which are controlled by different logic and those are all accounted for. I don't think any of the options are missing as far as I can see. This was installed by the original owner in '94 and I'm the third owner. The owners before me seem to had no clue and have been reliant on the Pool store, so no clear documentation on the setup. I had to dig through the old manuals to get the blueprint of the pool setup. I'll check if there is an Option B programming on the PDA once I get home tonight. Thanks for the insight..
