Elevated CYA, FC not dropping

I recently over shot a little (ok, a lot) when raising my CYA. I've drained some water and it's down to 110. My FC continued to rise despite me turning my SWG down every day when I checked parameters. 10 days ago I turned it off and my FC has not budged from about 10 where it peaked at 2 weeks ago.

Is it unusual for the FC to not come down with the CYA that high? How urgent is lowering the CYA? I won't be home for a few days to drain more water.

Current parameters (Taylor test kit except for TA)

pH...can't check (FC >10)

FC 10.2

TA 89

Calcium 360

CYA 110

Salt 3600 (SWG off)

sh,

Something is wrong.. your FC can't remain the same for 10 days no matter how high your CYA is...

Either your SWCG is not off (unlikely) or you are adding FC to your pool somehow. Do you have a tab feeder? Have you been adding pool store shock?

Tell us more because something is not right...

Do you have an auto-cover??

Thanks,

Jim R.

Maybe I don't know how to turn my SWG off? I turned it where it says enable to "No" and when FC continued to stay high I lowered the percentage to 0% and it still won't drop. I checked both with my Taylor kit and the Lamotte kit (both FAS-DPD). One said 10.2, one said 10.0.

The water I'm adding is chlorinated but only to the extent municipal water is.

No auto cover, haven't added anything except MA on the same schedule I usually have to (a guess since I can't accurately assess pH). Pool is in the shade for all but about 4 hours each day and we have had clouds/rain for most of the 10 days (but not all).I'm stumped.

sh,

I don't believe that the enable yes/no will turn off the cell, but the % at zero should.

Just to make sure, go out and look at the cell and make sure that the % lights are all zero (none are on..)

And the "Cell" light should be off...

Thanks,

Jim R.

sh,

Well then your cell is not off... anytime the cell light comes on it means the cell is producing chlorine.. Two lights could mean up to 40%..

And yes, you have the idea perfectly... at 50%, the cell light would be on about 50% of the time and off 50% of the time. About 2.5 minutes on and then 2.5 minutes off..

I suspect that when you turned the "Enable" off, you just turned off the communication between the cell and your automation. So although you adjusted the % to zero on the automation, it did not tell the cell... I suggest that you turn "Enable" to Yes, and then make sure the cell % lights are off..

Thanks,

Jim R.

It is set to create chlorine if the 'sanitizer lights' are on. The SWCG setting is between ~30 and 50%.

The Cell light comes on when chlorine is being generated. The IC uses a 300 second cycle. So at 50% it is on 150 seconds and off 150 seconds.

Jim beat me to it! Sorry for doubling up ---

Just a follow up. FC has dropped to 9.0 over night. pH is 7.6 so my MA guess wasn't bad. All sanitizer lights are all off.

In the past I have always just reduced the percentage to zero but I had the bright idea to just "turn it off" and set the percentage to where I thought it needed to be and then turn it back on when the FC level got to where I wanted it. Lesson learned!

Thanks again for the long distance diagnosis!
