I am hoping to open my pool this coming weekend but it may snow. Meanwhile, can I pull back the cover and throw in some powder CYA? Nothing is on and water is not circulating. I know the @ amount I need so I figured I'd get the ball rolling with it dissolving. Will it hurt anything just laying on the bottom (plaster) until it dissolves? Or is this a bad idea?

That's a bad idea. I had a sock hanging in front of a return that had a hole in it. A little bit of CYA came out and bleached a white spot in my blue plaster. I would recommend holding off until you get water circulating.

NOPE! Bad idea................it can cause damage to your plaster. We have one member, Dirk, who has a discolored spot on his plaster from dumping liquid CYA into his pool. I THINK his pump was on but that did not stop the damage.

I only add liquid chlorine in the off months, maybe one gallon per month and a half, then circulate with a submersible pump for a bit. I think others have reported that stuff like cya and ph readings are off with colder water, but not sure on the cya part for readings. I would hold out on adding any stabilizer till you open.

Well I sure am glad I asked first! Thanks this site is awesome!

I feel your pain. I want to start adding chemicals also, but the weather at night is below freezing. I have no FC and no CYA due to the insane storms this winter and the near record rain. I had to pump water out of my pool 3 times already from like december through march. Insane. Good thing is the water is only 46 so I'm not that worried about algae.......yet.

Normally this time of the year I just set up my pump to re-circulate, temporarily pull back the cover to remove the plugs and add some chlorine. Before I pull off the cover, usually in Mid May, I send the robot in once a week to do some undercover work. This usually results is a clean and sparkling opening. This year going to be different as it looks likes it time to replace the liner.

Word!

Pump was running, I was walking around the pool broadcasting it in slowly, after having mixed liquid CYA in a 5 gal bucket of water (PB's instructions). But I could feel a little still left in the original container, so I put some water in, shushed it around, and just poured that into one spot, thinking it was going to be just a little bit. Turns out what was at the bottom of the container was a big glob of undissolved CYA (much like the powder, I'd imagine), and it all came out and headed straight for the bottom. It was only a few moments to run and get my pool brush to sweep it in, but that's all it took...

It was that experience that has taught me to:
- Run everything by TFP
- Follow their instructions to the letter
- Don't modify their instructions by adding in your own logic (I'm still relearning this one!!)
- Don't mix'n'match instructions from various sources (as in: part TFP, part you, part pool store, part PB, part pool guy, part neighbor)
- Use with great care, in or around your pool, anything that has the word "acid" in its name or ingredients!!!

SWEET!!! Thank you and I am glad we could be here for you! I like helping you as you listen and ask great questions!

I be GOLD now baby! Yes I had been planning on donating for quite some time so this seemed the opportune time.

I compromised on the CYA and put 4 pucks in my auto puck floating thing. I know it is very low and I need chlorine as well so win/win. I so want to open! It is like gale force winds here right now so no chance today and they are saying we will get snow this weekend. Arghh!
