IC-20 flow problem

Hi all,

We have had an intermittent problem with our flow light/sensor on our IC-20 almost since the pool was installed last Fall, and was hoping some could provide me some guidance.

I have seen the threads from others with similar issues in the past but every solution seems to have failed...

Originally, the Intelliflo pump (my signature is wrong, it is the 3 HP version) was set at 2200 RPM which was probably a little fast but there is about 10 feet of head so it seemed acceptable. After about a week or so, the flow light came on and I had to increase the speed to 2400 RPM. This worked for a few weeks then I had to increase to 2600, etc, eventually I changed the DE media which gives me a few more days of it working. Of note, we have an automatic cover that is usually closed and there is very little to filter. Since then I have been checking daily and adding bleach as needed to keep the FC up.

The skimmers and drains are completely clean. As mentioned, I had previously tried replacing the DE, completely bypassing the filter ("recirculate"), increasing pump speed up to 3450, all without success. I had the pool company come out last week: they cleaned the pump, took the filter apart and manually cleaned it, acid cleaned the chlorinator, replaced the flow switch with a new one, and increased the pump speed to 2400 RPM. It worked for about 5 days. I even double checked and the new flow switch is in the correct orientation. The flow is so strong the check valve is wide, wide open and my kids complain the pressure from the jets makes it hard to swim and hurts them.

Our setup is posted below, we have a U-turn, then 8 inches of straight 2 inch pipe, then a see-through check valve, then another straight 18" before the chlorinator, before it goes to the returns.

I don't think the pump/flow is the problem (given I can see the check valve being wide open and the pressure coming out hurts), I don't think its the filter since the problem still occurs on recirculate. The second flow switch is now 5 days old.

I can only think of 3 possible issues:
1) There is some sort of vortex or erratic flow around the flow switch causing it not to trigger
2) We have a second bad flow switch in a row
3) We have an electrical problem with the IC-20.

I am tempted to just secure the flow switch with a plastic zip tie to keep it activated all the time since we always have our pump at a good flow rate and see what happens.

Any other thoughts/advice would be much appreciated!

It sounds like the switch is bad and it is time to call Pentair and file a warranty claim. I run mine (same pump) at 1100 rpm and I never get a flow error.
What is your clean filter pressure? And current filter pressure?

Mark,

Nothing obvious sticks out to me that would cause your flow light issue...

The flow switch is a safety device, so I would not zip tie it on a normal basis, but it is something that I would try on a temporary basis. If the light stays off you can have them come and put in another new flow switch. If the light stays on or is intermittent, you will know it has to be the IC20 itself.

These units are under warranty... is your pool builder sending out Pentair authorized repair techs? The authorized repair center here in the DFW area will bend over backwards to make things right...

Another thought... just to try... Remove the eyeballs from your pool returns and see what happens..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks,

The filter pressure at 2200 runs at 9, currently at 9 (the DE has been changed twice now in the past two weeks, also still happened on recirculate)

I tried removing the eyeballs, no difference. The pool company is sending out an authorized repair tech, I think he did everything that seems logical. The warranty is sort of funny, the replacement part was free but it was a $250 visit for them to troubleshoot it and replace the part.

I will have them come replace the flow switch again and I will call Pentair while I am waiting the few days it takes for them to show up...

mark,

Maybe it is where you live, but here warranty is warranty... My equipment was installed by my pool builder and he has never charge me a penny for any warranty work and they contact the local Pentiar center that also sends out a tech at no charge, parts and labor.. I had a three year warranty, the same as you I would assume, based upon the amount of equipment we bought.

I still like the idea of locking the flow switch in the closed position just as a test...

Thanks,

Jim R.

That would be nice, my pool company is not that nice but we live in a small town with N=1 options for pool companies, and they charge unfortunately. Strangely enough it has worked the last few days, I will wait until it stops working again and try locking it, at least that will tell me for sure where the problem is.

Thanks for all the help here!

Just for an update:
I tried the Zip Tie on the flow switch, the problem still occurred. After all of this, the pool company replaced the entire cell (including yet a 3rd flow switch) and it has been working perfectly for the past week. I will keep my fingers crossed, thanks for the input here!

The check valve before the SWCG creates a certain amount of turbulence. And it is not necessary. Just a thought if you continue to have problems.

I am not as lucky as I have to run my pump at 1500 rpm to close my flow switch.

Take care.
