Hello Everyone,

Ok, here I am again. Pump blew up. (every year!) I didn't do it! :hammer: LOL - So now I have another new pump. I was told the old union was kinda messed up so I ordered a new one (Hayward SP1480BLK 1-1/2-Inch MIP Black Self-Aligning Double Male End Union Replacement for select Hayward DE and Cartridge Filters) It has been installed, but now it leaks and I need to fix it myself. How do I stop the leak? The threads have been wrapped in Teflon tape and the union is supposed to be hand tightened. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!

Kindest Regards,
Renee

The O-ring didn't fall out or get misaligned, did it?

I'm going out now to take it apart and see if it's put together correctly and if the O-ring is there and properly aligned. I thought of that too. I'll let you know the outcome. Things never get done right unless I do it myself. :( Thank you!

It's not leaking anymore. Now, I'm cleaning the filter and adding new D.E. Why doesn't all the water drain out from the filter? It keeps flowing out and doesn't stop. This happens all the time and I've wondered about it. I've followed all instructions and maybe I'm missing something? Do I actually need to repeat the procedure like it says in the instructions? My filter is installed below the pool water line. The instructions read: If the filter is installed below the pool water line, opening the suction valve for a few seconds with the pump off will adequately flush the unit. I don't know what or where the suction valve is. I can't find it in the instructions. I'm having more problems this year. I've only been in my pool once so far! I'm frustrated.

The suction valve would be a valve before your pump. With the filter below water level you need valves on your suction lines coming from the pool and your return lines going to the pool that you can turn off so that the water does not continue to drain out into your filter when you open it up.

There isn't one. On the picture it states suction valve optional. I didn't get any other parts, but shows pool suction (skimmer outlet)? It looks like some tubing that comes out of the end of the pump in the picture and I didn't get anything like that with my system.

I don't see any pictured.

No filter I am aware of comes with a suction valve ... the filter is after all on the pressure side of the pump.
You would have had to add valves to your plumbing.

Here's a picture from the manual. I've been searching all day for the correct parts. :( Untitled (2).jpg

It is just a shut off valve on the suction line before the pump. You could find a PVC ball valve at any hardware store that you could install in the pipe if you want although those tend to get stiff and then break ideally you would put something like the Jandy neverlube 2 way valve before the pump.

Of course realize you also need a shut off valve on the return pipe heading back to the pool Jets.
