Thank you all for the advice on the current limiting resistor. My system had the same symptoms so I checked the 2 Ohm resistor with a meter and found it to be open circuit. There were no burn marks or cracks. I ordered 3 from DigiKey so I have a spare and one for a friend who has the same box...
