OK, I removed my pump to access the fan. The three screws on the fan shroud are insanely tight. There was no rust or corrosion on the screws but I applied penetrating oil to try and loosen them. I got the base of the core out. I ended up using the hooked end of a 3' crowbar. I got it under the base and tapped it upwards from beneath in several locations and it came out in under 30 seconds. As you can see there is sand on the sides of the base piece which probably had it wedged in there...
