    Proposed Skimmer Location

The skimmer should really be placed in the average downwind direction. If your local winds typically blow southeast, put it at the southeast end. Seeing as how its function is to pick up surface debris, winds will push floating debris toward the skimmer. The flush mount shouldn't impede anything...

First Pool Opening / Having trouble testing water and more!

He is referring to pool math and the balanced pool secitons. PoolMath To start the TFP method, read pool school, that should get you up to speed. Bring FC at least up to 4 ppm. So with 22K gal pool add 2 quarts and 3 cups (or 113 oz) of 10%. If you have no CYA you are going to need to bring...

Possible method for removing CYA from the pool

Welcome to the most useful pool forum out there! I just had an issue with CYA myself. (See thread here) I pegged my CYA at about 110 and to SLAM the pool (shock level and maintain) I had to really bring that CYA down otherwise I would have been using gallons and gallons of chlorine (like...

I assume that those are steel toed flip-flops. You know... safety and all. ;)

    Juggling High CYA and Algae

Here are my readings from today. Temp 66.7 FC 10.5 pH 7.6 TA 65 CH 200 CYA 45 Bo 15 TDS 1070 CC 0 CSI -0.49 Target FC 5 pH 7.5 TA 80 CH 250 CYA 45 Bo 55 My plan is to add some baking soda to get TA up a little. But pretty much leave the CH alone as it gradually climbs up during the summer...

    Juggling High CYA and Algae

Update: Saturday morning (Day 4). Checked for OCTL. 0 ppm loss. Suh-weet! Water is clear! Letting the FC come down still, then I'll recheck all the parameters and start adjusting again! Yay! Thanks for the help everyone! You are such a valuable resource! Is there anything else I need to do or...

    Juggling High CYA and Algae

Hmmm... last night I tested the FC @ 14.5 ppm and added the appropriate amount to bring it back up around 20 ppm. I didn't test it again as it was near bedtime. This morning came out and tested the FC level at 20.5 ppm. I can see clearly to the bottom, though when the pool lights are on they...

    Juggling High CYA and Algae

OK. Got it. Thanks, guys. First time and hopefully last time having to SLAM my pool. I will continue to update.

    Juggling High CYA and Algae

Here are some before and during pictures. A nice green tint to the water, but nothing too crazy. This is Day 2 still at shock level post filter clean.

    Juggling High CYA and Algae

Nearing the end of day two. FC only dropping 1-2ppm during the day. The 5mL FC testing helped tremendously (baby medicine syringe-now dedicated to pool). The pool is still slightly cloudy but much better. I cleaned the cartridge filters and removed as much organic material as I could get at...

    Juggling High CYA and Algae

Thanks. I have been using 10mL with straight pool water, but perhaps I need to add two scoops of reagent powder to capture all the FC. That could be a possibility. I may need to go out and get more bleach before the day is done. ;)

    Juggling High CYA and Algae

I found that my FC measurements were not quite accurate. I had 13 ppm again just now. But I thought it didn't seem right. I diluted the sample with tapwater (negligible CL) 50%. So thereby that would make each drop in the TF-test kit 1 ppm. Retested and then I got 18-19 ppm. This seems more...

    Juggling High CYA and Algae

I put the bleach in there to get it up to 20 ppm. Lost almost 8 ppm in an hour. Saw @Texas Splash's post added on another 14 oz of acid to bring it down to about 7.4 pH (yep, testing way off). But as calculated it should be sitting right around that.

    Juggling High CYA and Algae

Here are my pre-SLAM levels FC=0.5 CC=0.5 pH=7.5 TA=60 CH=200 CYA=45 Borates=15 I added a little bleach as it was filling up to curb the algae from running away. I added acid last night to bring the pH down. I'm not concerned with CH and TA at this point and the Borates I'll bring up later...

    Juggling High CYA and Algae

@AftonJepper @peirek Thanks. I removed likely more than 50% of the water and am currently refilling. I power washed the sides and grout on the tiles to remove the top portion of algae on the sides. The pool will likely be filled tonight and I'll start the SLAMMING tomorrow morning. Yeah, the...
