Happy to report back… I actually didn’t need to do anything beyond adding the Intellichlor to the display. I added bags of salt to the pool today and it almost immediately started reading output for me.

Ultimately the sod was the biggest factor. But we also put plastic landscape edging to channel the water in the direction we wanted it and cleared the drains on the pool deck. We've had a couple really good downpours recently and luckily we haven't had any problems.
