    Trying to get started

Great info, thanks a ton! The sky is very cloudy here (dark enough that my dusk-to-dawn light is on at 9:30 am!), so it's a bit hard to tell. I would say clear, no color, but hazy or chalky. There is still sediment on the bottom of the pool that I can never seem to get rid of. I vacuumed to...

    Trying to get started

Hello, Forum! I'm opening the pool for the summer after using SWCG last year. I pulled the cover to find a green mess. For the life of me, I can't find my TF-100, so at the pool store I grabbed this PoolMaster Basic 5 test kit until my new TF-100 arrives (already ordered). So, I don't have...

    Algae bloom * pH

Okay, based on yesterday's thread, I'm shocking my pool right now. The odd thing is that, since the rain storm last week that kicked off this whole problem, my pH has slowly been raising. It stayed solid at 7.4 for weeks. Since the rain storm, it's gone to 7.8, and now looks close to 7.2. I...

    Please confirm need to shock

Okay, loading up the wagon with bleach. Thanks, Jason!

    Please confirm need to shock

Oops -- not sure what my brain was typing. I corrected that.

    Please confirm need to shock

I think I need to shock my pool, but am looking for someone else's opinion (besides my own) to confirm. We got a rain storm through the other night. The next morning, my pH had moved from 7.4-7.5 to almost 7.8. Then, the water started getting cloudy, and has slowly started getting a greenish...

    Chlorine levels dropping

and, sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm working on the assumption that the kids should NOT swim while shocking. Correct?

    Chlorine levels dropping

I'm really confused. I've kept FC at shock level (16+) for three days. The overnight drop is minimal (1-2ppm), but I can't seem to get CC to drop below 0.5. The water is crystal clear. ph is holding steady at 7.5. CYA is 50. Do I need to keep shocking at this point? It would seem that...

    Chlorine levels dropping

Okay, just checked twice and got two results. FC/CC for test 1 was 1.5/.5?, test two was 2/1. So, should I go to shock mode tonight, or wait and check in the morning to see if I lost chlorine overnight? If I wait, do I bring chlorine up to 6 (target according to CYA chart) tonight? If so, do...

    Chlorine levels dropping

I should have stated my CC is at .5 consistently. Sorry for forgetting that. I've not re-checked FC overnight, but it was stable for three days before I adjusted TA and CYA. I've just been adding bleach every morning to get it back up to 6. I'll check it again tonight and compare it tomorrow.

    Chlorine levels dropping

This morning's numbers (from a TF100): pH: 7.4-ish FC: 1.5 CYA: 50-60 TA: 80-90 When I opened the pool three weeks ago, it was the first time in two years (new owner of the house). The pool cover was very old and had plenty of holes, so there was a LOT of gunk in the pool. I've...

    Cleaning a dimpled-bottom pool

New pool owner and new forum member (thanks, cokomo!) My pool bottom is extremely deep-dimpled. I'm guessing when the previous home owner installed the pool they spread the liner by walking on it on dry, unpacked sand. After not being opened last summer, there is a good amount of dirt still...
