Thanks for all the great advice. Will keep the Cl up at shock level. Other then CYA rarely buy other chemicals from the pool store but very tempted to try Leslie's Alum product.

Knowing that the overnight CL test is zero, do I need to maintain a shock level of Cl or can I bring it back down to normal levels?

Thanks for the replies, I have a 22k pool and my filter is 300lbs. Was thinking 500 would be undersized but there is only 2 1.5 returns coming in to the filter. Filter that is there now is DE. It's adequate but aging and needs replacement. Was hoping to avoid going back to DE
