I think it's minerals from hard water, what can I do to counteract?

Would increasing calcium hardness help protect the heating element and prevent flaking. I know my CH needs to be a certain level in the pool to protect my pool heat exchanger.

I find when I need to Drain, Ill connect the vacuum hose to the bottom port on the filter and drain from there.... with the pump on low it drains a few inches in just minutes... or if I'm unattended for a spell I turn it off, so there is no chance of something stupid happening like the incoming...

I should also note I have two locations where I turn off the gas... one just befoer the joint that's stuck and one by the house and meter (On the dedicated line out to the heater)
