The spa should be under freeze protection as well. My setup (Pentair automation) cycles between pool and spa mode every half hour when the freeze protection kicks in. Good luck!

Yipes! Your gas bill is going to be scary, neighbor! I wonder if you can just disconnect the automation line to the heater as a temporary workaround—you know, just unplug the RS-485 cable.

We've got a copper scupper for a rain curtain that empties into the pool. I use the copper test kit from TFTestKits monthly and an never get a reading. Also, my daughter's blonde hair is still blonde, so if there's any copper leaching it's really quite minimal.

Re: question on winter operations for inground w spillway Te North of Dallas here and we keep it open year round. If we want to do some winter hot tubbing we just fire it up like Cajun and step in after an hour. Or if we want to burn through a lot of money we heat the pool itself. The system...

While I never let my local Leslie's test my water, they are an invaluable resource for spare parts on the same day that you break something that you absolutely need. They're like the Radio Shack of pool plumbing.

And yet ... Winter is coming. (What? No Game of Thrones fans?)

Not sure about above ground, but my in-ground doesn't close and I'm north of Dallas. The pump is set to automatically come on when the air temperature drops below 39°F.

I put together a bunch of PVC pipe in all sorts of configurations. The kids then slide them into the hollow centers of pool noodles and make floating sculptures, like Tinker Toys. It's friction that holds the noodle to the pipe. Might be able to construct a chair with them, never tried.

Wow! Clever! Yeah, vacuum the bottom and maybe add a soundtrack and it'd be a great endorsement.
