    Mustard Algae or Pollen

Reviving an old thread. Yes, it was in fact mustard algae. I can only seem to get it under control where it's not a problem during the pool season. The issue is mustard algae can live on anything! Clothes, stairs, pool toys, floaties, e.t.c. As soon as I feel it's gone I start seeing 1/4 inch...

Congrats man! You're almost done. You should definetly do a before and after photo. It can get lost in the 139 posts!

    Mustard Algae or not?

Kelly, doesn't dead mustard algae come up white instead of brown?

    Mustard Algae or not?

I needed to shock the pool at mustard algae level to remove it. I had it at 26-30ppm for CYA ~40

I hadn't realized how bad your pool was until I saw the photos and missed the first one you posted. Yikes! No wonder it took you so long. Good job

    Mustard Algae or not?

Yes, I had mustard algae type 2 and I passed the OCLT and my CC was 0. If you brush it does it turn brown and disappear? This algae is really difficult to remove. It took about a week to get it under control. Another thing you can do is grab it with your hands and see if it feels somewhat slimy...

Should it really take a month of SLAM to clean the pool? Maybe there's an issue with the equipment? I would think it'd be cheaper to do a partial drain and refill.

    Cloudy pool.. need help

Have you tried the SLAM( Shock, Level, and Maintain) process? It takes a couple days. A pool store like Leslie will say it's phosphates and try to sell you something that's $40. It may go away for a few days, but probably come back. Edit: Also, your FC is somewhat low. You should be around...

Yeah, that's what I would do. You already know how much chlorine is loss throughout the day so just do that while you're gone.

It sounds like you have a routine by now, and maybe they can just follow that without having to deal with the testing too much? I wouldn't mess with the CYA.

I'm assuming you're using the the TF kit for measuring the chlorine so I could see it requiring some knowledge. Are you losing a lot of chlorine overnight? Adding chlorine at night should last you till lunch and you could skip the AM. How long have you been on the SLAM process?

    Can not get pool clear

So you have a FC of 45PPM and you still have algae and cloudy pool? How old are the solutions of your TF kit?

    Questions before I SLAM

When I had mustard algae I didn't vacuum until I was done with the SLAM process. Ideally you should beforehand , but it didn't make a difference in my scenario - mustard algae would appear the next day. If it looks clean and clear and the only issue you have is mustard algae I would skip it.

    Questions before I SLAM

Yes I would lower the PH down to 7.2. Once you start the SLAM process your PH will be inaccurate. Also, I've done the SLAM a few times for mustard algae, and if I have the PH at 7.6 it takes a lot longer for the algae to disappear. As far as your CYA the chart shows 30 to be okay. If anything...
