    Mustard Algae or Pollen

Reviving an old thread. Yes, it was in fact mustard algae. I can only seem to get it under control where it's not a problem during the pool season. The issue is mustard algae can live on anything! Clothes, stairs, pool toys, floaties, e.t.c. As soon as I feel it's gone I start seeing 1/4 inch...

Congrats man! You're almost done. You should definetly do a before and after photo. It can get lost in the 139 posts!

    Mustard Algae or not?

Kelly, doesn't dead mustard algae come up white instead of brown?

    Mustard Algae or not?

I needed to shock the pool at mustard algae level to remove it. I had it at 26-30ppm for CYA ~40

I hadn't realized how bad your pool was until I saw the photos and missed the first one you posted. Yikes! No wonder it took you so long. Good job

    Mustard Algae or not?

Yes, I had mustard algae type 2 and I passed the OCLT and my CC was 0. If you brush it does it turn brown and disappear? This algae is really difficult to remove. It took about a week to get it under control. Another thing you can do is grab it with your hands and see if it feels somewhat slimy...

    My green monster

Should it really take a month of SLAM to clean the pool? Maybe there's an issue with the equipment? I would think it'd be cheaper to do a partial drain and refill.

    Cloudy pool.. need help

Have you tried the SLAM( Shock, Level, and Maintain) process? It takes a couple days. A pool store like Leslie will say it's phosphates and try to sell you something that's $40. It may go away for a few days, but probably come back. Edit: Also, your FC is somewhat low. You should be around...

    My green monster

Yeah, that's what I would do. You already know how much chlorine is loss throughout the day so just do that while you're gone.

    My green monster

It sounds like you have a routine by now, and maybe they can just follow that without having to deal with the testing too much? I wouldn't mess with the CYA.

    My green monster

I'm assuming you're using the the TF kit for measuring the chlorine so I could see it requiring some knowledge. Are you losing a lot of chlorine overnight? Adding chlorine at night should last you till lunch and you could skip the AM. How long have you been on the SLAM process?

    Can not get pool clear

So you have a FC of 45PPM and you still have algae and cloudy pool? How old are the solutions of your TF kit?

    Questions before I SLAM

When I had mustard algae I didn't vacuum until I was done with the SLAM process. Ideally you should beforehand , but it didn't make a difference in my scenario - mustard algae would appear the next day. If it looks clean and clear and the only issue you have is mustard algae I would skip it.

    Questions before I SLAM

Yes I would lower the PH down to 7.2. Once you start the SLAM process your PH will be inaccurate. Also, I've done the SLAM a few times for mustard algae, and if I have the PH at 7.6 it takes a lot longer for the algae to disappear. As far as your CYA the chart shows 30 to be okay. If anything...

    Chlorine Special

I tested it this morning and so far so good. My chlorine rose about 5ppm for 1gal which is roughly what the Pool Math calculator told me.

    Chlorine Special

Did anyone get some liquid Chlorine this memorial day from Home Depot? Hopefully it's still good. Going to check tonight

    Mustard Algae or Pollen

There's about 10% left for the past day, and hasn't gone away. I decided to vacuum today since we got some good rain. I'll raise it to 30ppm tonight. It doesn't have the white characteristics, but rather brownish which makes me believe it's alive

    Mustard Algae or Pollen

So I've been keeping the water at mustard algae level.. 25PPM for 5 days.. I still see about 10% left. Should I continue or should I follow your advice of two weeks at 20%?

    Mustard Algae or Pollen

05/02 9:00a.m. Scrubbed entire pool and noticed less algae. FC : 24ppm 05/02 5:30p.m. Scrubbed entire pool and noticed a significant drop in algae! About 80%. FC was 17ppm. Added 6 quarts to maintain at 25ppm I'm hoping tommorrow morning algae will drop a considerate amount. I'm really glad...

What kind of algae do you think you have? Any details?

    Mustard Algae or Pollen

So I started the SLAM process yesterday night. First thing I did was vacuum the algae. 04/30 8:30p.m. CYA: 45 PH : 7.2 Raised FC to 25PPM from 5PPM 05/01 9:00a.m Scrubbed entire pool. Still had lots of algae. FC:24ppm 05/01 5:00p.m. Scrubbed pool. Mustard algae still present. FC was about...

    Mustard Algae or Pollen

It still disappears when I grab it. I tried grabbing a piece to bring it up to the surface and take a photo, but it just dissolves. Yes, if I brush it will form a brown cloud and disappear. I don't even need to brush. Just swinging my hands to create air pockets underwater will make it disappear.

    Mustard Algae or Pollen

Here are some zoomed in pictures.. You can see in the light it's kind of brownish. That's how all the spots look like. How do people take pictures? My keep coming out dark, even in sunlight.

    Mustard Algae?

I think I have the same issue! I've been battling this thing for a year. I thought it was the sand filter for a long time. Let me know if you were able to remove it! I'm going to try this weekend now that I got the TF-100 kit. I'm trying to get better pictures, but here's my thread. Does your...

New build (Vinyl liner) salt or no salt???

My stabilizer rails corroded, and I'm currently trying to find a replacement for them. The rest of pool is resin which I should be ok. I'm not the original owner of the above ground pool, but it's at least 5-7 years old. I asked this question awhile back, and I just got the reply that it was...

    Stabilizer Rails and SWG

Hey Everyone, I recently switched from SWG to liquid chlorine, and I already miss it. I had to switch because the stabilizer rails on my above ground pool and deck screws had been corroded from the salt. I can replace the screws, but I'm still looking at what I can do about the rails. My...

    Mustard Algae or Pollen

Here are some photos. The 1st photo is running the pump for 8 hours. Its difficult to see the bottom. It doesn't look black like the picture shows, but brownish. I'm trying to get better pictures. The 2nd photo is not running the pump overnight, which looks good.

    Mustard Algae or Pollen

I didn't continue the SLAM because the next morning my pool was filled with the brown substance even though my OCLT was 1.5ppm and my FC was 30ppm. Yes! Let me fix my signature. I do have several trees around the pool, but not hanging over it. About 30ft away. It seems to be worst when the...

    Mustard Algae or Pollen

Hey everyone! Finally decided to join TFP after following several threads on here :). I've learned a lot of good stuff over the past several weeks from this forum. Now I need some help. For the past 3 months I've been battling some sort of mustard algae/pollen that won't go away. I removed the...
