It is a 1 inch or 1.5 inch angled tube that is flush with the plaster. There is no threads or anything. Looks like a pvc tube. Can I insert some smaller tube into the tube and give it a threaded opening? The problem I see is the tube is at an angle and not perpendicular with the plaster wall.

I want to replace an old ball valve with a new Jandy no lube valve. Should I put a union on each end of the new valve? Can I use a union from Home Depot or does it need to be pool specific? Thanks
