2023 pool season chlorine supply: should I buy now or wait until the summer?

I'm starting to wonder! Being short one manufacturing plan could definitely explain some of the cost increase. The gallon jugs from Home Depot and Lowes have always been more expensive than the pool store but I hate dealing with those 2.5 gallon ones (which I get to wrestle when I'm doing my...

2023 pool season chlorine supply: should I buy now or wait until the summer?

Does anyone know if there is a supply chain issue that is affecting the price of chlorine or just straight up price gouging?

2023 pool season chlorine supply: should I buy now or wait until the summer?

We usually buy 10% chlorine from Home Depot or Lowes but we are up to about $9 per gallon in Central FL so we finally have to switch over to jug lugging (as someone said above). 2.5 gallon jugs (10%) at my neighborhood pool store (independently owned) are $6.40, including tax, so $2.56 per...

The Girl With The Huge Pool

I could not live without a SpeedStir but, boy, those things have gotten pricey! The Taylor SamleSizer is the next thing I can't live without.

Hearing cicadas from my pool pump

Yes, I was thinking 7 years is a long time. No, it is not sheltered but it is in the shade most of it's run time (8am-2pm). No leaks as of yet. Just thought I heard something a little off...maybe.

Hearing cicadas from my pool pump

I have a generic 1.5 hp pool pump that has been installed for about 6.5 years. I run it about 6 hours a day for my 20,000 gallon pool and I try to keep the pressure at my cartridge filter no higher than about 12-13 pounds . Today, while putting chlorine in my pool, I thought I was hearing...

    Living with high CYA

My neighbors are an adult daughter (still working) and her mother (retired). The mom has just been diagnosed with a tumor on her kidney which is almost certainly cancerous because she is a longtime smoker. It's small and was found accidentally. I took her to the kidney surgeon yesterday and he...

    Living with high CYA

Are CH and TA tests accurate at very high chlorine levels? I measured CH and TA prior to the SLAM. CH prior to SLAM was 300 and after was 275. That's only one drop difference so basically the same. TA prior to the SLAM was 50 and 90 after but I had added baking soda prior to the SLAM and after...

    Living with high CYA

Thank you for reminding me about digital pH meters. I actually had a new one (replacement for one that went wacko) sitting in my pool box I had not yet calibrated. I calibrated it and measured her pH at 7.5. That was a couple of days ago so it is time to measure again. I'm guess it's up a bit.

I diluted and retested and my estimate of 110 was good.

Yes, I forgot about doing this and should get it done soon.

    Living with high CYA

It's funny you say that because it crossed my mind. I sent her to refill the 2.5 gallon jugs at the pool store. I never priced bulk chlorine because I don't want to deal with the transporting the jugs. The chlorine in gallon jugs from Home Depot and Lowes has gotten more expensive during the...

    Living with high CYA

No copper ever added to my knowledge and there are no stains on the pool surface. I was wondering at what chlorine levels the issues with being able to accurately measure pH started. I'm guessing diluting a sample doesn't work like it does for other thests.

    Living with high CYA

I helped my neighbor through a SLAM a couple of years ago. I tried to talk her into using TFP but she declined and went back to pucks. She asked for my help again recently because, of course, she was fighting an algae outbreak...one she couldn't beat. Now, unfortunately, her CYA is up to 110 (at...

Average salt level for a non-SWG pool

[365 days/year x 4 years x 24 ounces/day x 8.2 ppm/gallon]/128 ounces/gallon = 2244 ppm So, I estimate I have added 2245 ppm of salt (on average) over the last 4 years. We have times of very heavy rains (including hurricanes) where water is removed from the pool so I'm guessing the level is...
