Most of them nowadays thread in place, however, it could be an older style and be permanently in the concrete. Usually if it is located in a plastic main drain then it threads in.
You should check out The Skimmer Angel. It’s an inexpensive product that will mount to most skimmer baskets. It’s a basket handle so you don’t have to worry about bugs, snakes, etc.
I would go with an epoxy pool paint that is sprayed on. It will give you a fiberglass-type feeling and will be much smoother than even plaster. It will also cost a lot less.
Have you checked your cleaner hose for holes? If you get air in the pump with the cleaner on then I would check that.

What type of filter do you have? Have you considered cleaning it or changing the media? Additionally, have you changed the pump lid o-ring? More often than not the bubbles in the pump are because of that o-ring. Even if it looks in good shape it should be snug. It may be stretched out a little...
