I have decided to go ahead and add the second return. I don't plan on closing the pool, my friends with IG pools don't drain theirs during the winter here so kind of following their lead.

Yes I am burying the pipe and have a handful of unions and valves. I hope to start the process this weekend. I am now reading all about nut grass preventers.
