I would think that the preferred orientation would be hump down and cord first to not have the cell reactions influence the temperature probe.

What flow rate are you running? If the blades are not fully wetted the salt calculations will not be correct.

Make sure Aquarite is set to T-3 Cell. Incorrect cell choice will give higher salt concentration.

How are you testing salt?

Test strips are never accurate, they have many interferences that produce erroneous results. Digital salt testers can be accurate but need to be constantly calibrated with known reference solutions.
