Pool Temperature - solar pool cover

Am sort of surprised by the recommendations to get a thin solar cover (8 mil). I have always purchased the 12 mil cover thinking it lays on top of the water better and retains more heat and is still not nearly as heavy as the 16 mil covers. Am I wrong?

    Pink Slime

Appreciate the info. Pretty sure I have some broken bubbles on the pool cover (cover purchased in 2014) - does that mean I need to purchase a new cover???:(

    Pink Slime

During SLAM: pH 7.2 (tested prior to SLAM) CYA 40 FC 17 CC 0.5 TA 120 I am using 12.5% Pool Shock for my chlorine source. We had about a two week period of cooler weather and rain so pool cover stayed on most of that time - would imagine that's where I got into trouble with the pink slime? My...

    Pink Slime

Just discovered pink slime along the skimmer and pool ladder. I am in the process of SLAMMING the pool (water is crystal clear to the eye). Have removed the ladder and sprayed with chlorine solution and brushing pool walls, etc. Wondering if I need to do anything to the solar cover to...

When to test CYA after initial start-up

The water is definitely not even close to warm yet - so even if the cyanuric acid is testing 0, I should assume there is an adequate CYA level and just wait until the water warms up to retest? Guess I have never heard the CYA test needs the water to be warm. Interesting.

When to test CYA after initial start-up

My starting level of CYA level was 0. Do I have to wait a certain period of time before testing the CYA level after the addition of stabilizer? I am using the sock method for addition of cyanuric acid. I have a 17,000 gallon above ground pool (5ft deep) and after adding almost 4 lbs of...

Red Algae (Bacteria - now what?

Just found red algae (bacteria) in my pool - have started the SLAM process - shocked to FC level of 20 (CYA=40) and am continuing to add chlorine until the 3 criteria are met. Pool ladder was covered with red slime so removed from pool and sprayed with chlorine solution - also floaties. Solar...

    When to close?

Just wondering if it is recommended to use a winterizing kit for closing an above ground pool for the appropriate gallons? Any pros or cons? Otherwise, looks like the only recommendation for closing was a possible polyquat algaecide? Just curious what is recommended to close for the winter - MN...

Metal Staining - a Seemingly Never Ending Problem

I was looking at adding a quart for 16,000 gallons - do I need to worry about FC?

Metal Staining - a Seemingly Never Ending Problem

Another question regarding the use of ProTeam's Metal Magic - do I have to be concerned with the FC level when I add a quart of the Metal Magic? The label indicates FC should be at or below 1 and you should not plan on superchlorinating for 7 days - is that true? I want to remove any metals in...

    NO FREE CHLORINE

Actually my CYA was at 0 before I added the trichlor - it read around 30 after adding the 10 lbs of trichlor. I did go out and buy more pool shock and based on everything I am reading here, that is all I will use to shock my pool. It appears that I have maintained my FC level overnight after...

    Pool Test Kits

I have a Taylor K-2005 test kit so am not familiar with the FAS-DPD titrating reagent - can someone explain to me what this test actually does and can I buy the reagent R-0871 and use it with my current Taylor kit?
