The intake valve being the Jandy Valve, C that I listed? When I switch from pool to spa you can see the jandy valve slowing rotating into position like I have seen in the past.

Decompose Granite, it's a crushed rock that is used a lot under artificial turf. I had some extra and used it for the fire bowls. It drains well. Anything that will drain well should work. Rocks, Gravel, DG, etc.
