After getting all the stuff out of the hot tub I found that the surface has what looks like a crack. It’s been repaired but that seems to have worn off. Here’s a pic.

I don't see any brand markings on the exterior. I guess I'll have to pull a side panel.

I've never owned a hot tub, and the one at my rental house was full of pool gear. Can I run some tests without filling it with water? I'd hate to fill it just to find out the pump or heater are broken, but don't want to damage anything by running it dry either!

I thought that might be the case with the pool store guy. Pleatco sounds good enough for me, and in any case it will be far better than the one currently that's in there.

After reading some posts here at TFP I've seen that several here have had good performance from Pleatco. That is the cheapest filter on amazon, so if it's decent then I will get that. I don't need this filter to last years as I might not be in this rental for more than a year.

I think the problem was the filter. The guy at the pool store said to take the filter out and turn the pump on. So I did that and got about 10 lb psi on the filter gauge. While the filter was out I sprayed with the high pressure nozzle and put it back and it the gauge measured 10 lb. So I guess...
