Houston, TX Pool Build Diary - From Design to Dive-In

LOL the last I heard is he is still not sure of the plaster color. He posted his tile colors a page or so back (sorry too lazy to look for it for you LOL)

PLAT! That is SO neat! When you do something you DO it! With the spa feet rests did they form them out of steel first? I would have had to watch them gunite those just to see their faces when they saw it!

I bet others following this thread and in the future will copy some of what you did it is so neat!

The second from bottom step..........I go back and forth on it. Try walking it and see if you think someone will step off the third step from just walking without looking or at night when it is darker.

Will you be doing step markers?

Kim

In Houston, if a pool is less than 5' from a foundation (including a garage) then you have to have a structural engineer approve it.

Plat, I love all of your ideas! I can just picture your PB when you you'd start out..."I have an idea..."

I think that is why is why he said it was a non-issue. His thoughts were that the engineering approval would not be a problem given what we were doing. And yeah, he gets a look that usually happens when I start a sentence off with "I have an idea". We've developed a stage act now. I'm the comic and he's the straightman.

Oh wow! Love it all plat! Looking so good! Trying to picture it all now. What are your coping/tile/plaster selections again?

As far as materials, let me make a separate post with the recent updates so it doesn't get lost here.

They added steel for the foot rests. Just a simple loop. Watching them build the foot rests was kind of neat. They dropped a shovel load of gunite to get them started and then they were just throwing handfuls of it onto the mound and sides and shaping it. The stuff sticks like Velcro. The crew mostly just seemed amused by everything. They did show concern that we could trip over the pedestals (he made a drinking out of a bottle gesture when he said that LOL) which is valid. We'll need to be careful. The foot rest was just too comfortable not to try. We may end up regretting it, who knows. If I post about a broken toe, then we'll all know...

I did build a mock-up of the seating with all the angles we wanted and the pedestal in our bathroom using a vanity stool, plywood and some boxes so I have high hopes for this idea. Our builder was "amused" by this so I took a picture of me sitting on it holding a beer to show him. My builder already asked and NO, it won't be posted publicly... :D

No step markers as of right now. Preference was for a cleaner look on the floor, but we might change our mind on this.

Thanks!

PLAT!!!!!!!!! I think you nailed it! I love all of the picks!

LOL on not sharing the pic. Better safe than sorry! It had blackmail written all over it! Better not make your PB mad! Hummmmm what was his name again?

Kim

Now that's funny!!! How's that wine, btw? Red or white?

That is a red. If you enjoy reds (and California Cabs to be specific), it's a very nice wine. We've been Nickel & Nickel club members for years and did barrel tastings, futures purchases and events at the winery back when we lived next to Napa before we moved to Houston. That right their appears to be a (empty) case of 2006 Dragonfly.

LOVE it! Did you give him the measurements and angles to work from? (this is a true question as I LOVE to learn how others do things).

Kim

Yes. We measured the distance of the bottom of the angled back from the wall and gave him that and the added height at the front of the seat to get the slant. My wife and I would keep sitting in it and adjusting it until we got something that we both thought was comfortable.

It worked by the way...

Our builder asked us to stay out of the spa until today because we had him carve/slant the base of the bench where your feet go inward so you could tuck your heels in. It meant that there was not a straight wall of gunite underneath the front lip to support it so he wanted it to really set up before we got in it so we didn't risk cracking it. I got in this morning and it's more comfortable than any hard bench I've ever sat it. With the curve on the inside top edge and the recline to it, it's the barcalounger equivalent of a spa bench. I cannot wait to get in this thing and get ma' tub on!
